Buy it! March 24, 2007 si-man (uk) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Spent a long time looking at MP3 devices for the home- got fed up of MP3 players that use the TV screen (Microsoft Media Center/Apple TV) etc (takes too long to switch it on and find that album) or using an IPOD the screen is too small, no internet radio access etc Also my aim was to find a system that that met my most significant other half's non techie requirements (easy to use, reliable, looks good, quite). The Squeezebox is small, instant on, the display is clear and crisp, and it is silent and very fast. Installation was almost flawless - I use a QNAP TS-201 NAS (the TS-101 should be fine as well) with slimserver to store the music on (there are others you can use)(this gives me 1TB of disk space!) and plugs into my home network, best get the QNAP with slim server pre installed - (though you can do a DIY job and download if you find that fun). Set up was easy, plugged the QNAP in loaded all my music into the public folder under "music", then plugged the squeezebox in, it found the network, updated itself rebooted then found the QNAP and within minutes was ready to start playing! It is a very friendly system... set it up right and it will work flawlessly .. no crashes + easy to use interface = no ear ace ;) Some tips that might help: a) I used an Ethernet cable to the box as it reduces the chance of drop outs on the wireless. b) I have a good quality wired network with switches (using NetGear GS801) to ensure the best performance and reliability c) For the any geeks reading this I set the networks DHCP server to fix the IP addresses of both the QNAP and squeeze box (which are both left as dynamic). Ensuring the QNAP uses a static address just prevents any issues with IP address changes causing confusion with the squeezebox, again I was after flawless it must always work d) I have also just bought a pronto universal remote; a programmable remote of some form does help speed through the menus e) I have a good internet connection (in my case its 10mbit though less should be fine) which stops contention on the link (especially if you use VOIP and are doing file downloads etc) f) I used the QNAP server rather than a PC as its very reliable .. unlike any PC I have ever used. So what are the down sides? To be honest not many.. mostly minor niggles- The menu structure is a bit annoying and could be refined to reduce the options available for general (none techie) use (how many time will you need settings menu yet its on the top menu or the pluggins menu) There are no buttons on the device, so it can be a case of hunt the remote to pause/stop it when you are answering a phone call/door. For this reason I have a small 4 button remote fixed next to the squeeze box to allow it to be turned off/down quickly. Accessing BBC radio is easy the quality is excellent and much easier than using a PC and real player .. but why did they call it "Alien BBC"? The only issues with radio access is pausing it for too long causes the stream to stop and you have to go back to the start of the program again, so for that matter does pressing FF or REW. The lack of buttons on the device and the reliance on internet/mains power etc means that though it has an alarm function, I wouldn't trust it as an alarm clock. Having to try to find the remote in the dark to tell it to snooze just doesn't work for me. So of all I would say 9.9 out of 10, it must be good I have just bought another! PS though I am no Audiophile - the sound quality is fantastic!
New Squeezebox December 21, 2006 R. W. Bromley (UK) It came today, tonight I sit enjoying streamed mp3's and Radio 1 with only a little setting up. I am really impressed. I reckon I spent an hour setting it up, but them I installed extra plug in's that allowed me to stream radio 1 easily. It has exceeded my expectations of what it should do. Documentation is a bit weak bit there is loads on the web.
The Ultimate Hi Fi Device December 5, 2006 Mr. C. S. K. Walls (Chippenham, Wiltshire United Kingdom) I have replaced a four foot stack of black boxes, and yards of spaghetti wiring with this one device. My living room is now uncluttered, my music is instantly to hand, and the sound quality is amazing. This is the best music listening device I have ever bought. PS I have two, one for the kitchen as well.
Shock and Awe April 20, 2006 Tolga I. Uzuner 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
The only device that has exceeded my expectations in the last 2 years. Flawless. It works. User interface is astounding. Looks great. Sounds amazing. Has all the features that it should have: no obvious mistakes in the design, and some extras that really should be there but you wouldn't have thought about. Buy two.
