4 out of 5 stars Not a cutting edge speed machine - but good basic storage for PC and PS3   September 24, 2008
R. Battersby (UK)
I've had three of these for some months and as a stand alone backup they are hard to fault, but I don't leave them on constantly. I knocked one from my desk and it packed up - hardly surprising - but that's not the fault of the drive. It gave me an opportunity to have a look inside. There was a SATA Seagate drive - can be replaced quite easily. If you are worried about an on/off switch may I suggest a switched mains supply panel? I have them attached to PC's and also use one as storage for digital images to look at on a large TV screen via a PS3. Remember not to reformat to NTFS if you wish the PS3 to recognise it. Leave it as FAT32. M**RO are selling these at present for 47, including the 12v 2A UK power supply. I see nothing wrong with the design - it's a black box! IMHO a cheap means of backing up the entire contents of most PC's for peace of mind, not a cutting edge speed machine.

2 out of 5 stars Looks good, but . . .   September 13, 2008

Remember that La Cie is essentially a Mac company and therefore concentrates on design rather than performance. Their boxes look good -- they are designed by F. A Porsche (wow!), so if you're a MacUser, you will be impressed.

However inside there is a bog-standard Seagate hard drive with a serial ATA -- though it is very difficult to get inside -- you're not meant to get inside a Mac. However the performance is not so good - they run hot -- don't try to stack them or they will fry - and don't drop them, or they will die.

If you are PC user, look at the Western Digital external hard drives which have an ugly rubber band at either end to keep them from slipping - and if they do slip to ensure that they have some sort of protection. My last LaCie slipped from the computer, and is now dead. I now have a Western Digital replacement.

If you're a Mac person, you'll love the name of a classy box designer. If you are a PC user and are looking for solid performance, look elsewhere.

I got this as a backup drive to my other Lacie 500gb. I was lucky to get it at an all time low price of 51.50 which included the expedited delivery from the seller at 8.50. Bargain.
It was just as reliable as the other one when transferring data, but I cannot offer too much more about this product as it's a backup and hasn't even been switched on since all the original transferring.

As for the actual build, it's nice. Slightly smaller than my other HD.
It does get quite hot, and doesn't have an on/off switch and comes again with the small USB lead. I got mine with a UK plug, and I think this would be the case buying from most sellers except for the notorious french based company.

All in all I'm happy, because it works and leaves me with peace of mind regarding having the data of my primary HD now backed up.
Obviously usage is minimal and I'll provide an updtae if and when neccessary should there be any problems down the line, but as far as I can say right now, this drive is as good as any and is usually at a cheaper price than any other same spec HD's.

1 out of 5 stars If you want a reliable hard drive then don't buy this!   June 23, 2008

I had one of these for about 2 months. All went well and it seemed to be doing the job. Then I lost the drive Icon from my PC and discovered the drive was dead and smoke was coming out. I contacted the customer service dept who have been less than helpful. I wanted the drive repaired and the data left intact. I would have thought this would be possible as it had only overheated and the motor needs replacing. Lacie did not want to know. They will repair but will erase all the data (why?). Data recovery is not covered by the guarantee and could cost as much as 500 (nearly 10x the purchase price). Even after asking several times they have not provided any details of how I can return the drive for repair. I have given up with this one and will replace with a Seagate drive.

1 out of 5 stars poor manufacturing and poor customer services   June 15, 2008

I bought 4 lacie drivers since 2002, they all now are dead. They might look good but the manufacturing standard is less than desirable. Try another manufacturer if you can. This is my experience with their customer services: After I had wrote to them that my new hard disk was broken and had lot's of important files on it. And I need to recover the files they said even if I send to their recommended places and paid for the recover that what happens "If the drive is sent a data recovery service and the case is opened then the warranty on the drive will be voided, because the warranty void seal will be broken" so they send you a bad manufacturer driver you pay to recover the files and the warranty is lost. One of their main supplier of Hard Disk is Wester Digital and they have a complete different policy on broken hard disk and recovery files. Bear that in mind when you buy your Hard Disk. Money is not that important when your family photos are gone!
