4 out of 5 stars Very useful. A good user interface is all that's missing.   October 9, 2008

The Freecom 500GB external hard drive has certainly been a great help in backing up all our small business files and (loads of) personal data. The drive itself is about 15cm long and an inch thick, so it's very portable. It's quite rugged and will certainly withstand a few accidental drops. The unit simply plugs into your computer via USB. It has no fan so is not noisy and it does not get overly hot when plugged in for extended periods.

Transferring files is easy enough. It works the same as a Flash Drive. Just plug it in and open the E: or F: drive and either copy and paste or drag and drop the files. For small files it is mere milliseconds to transfer, however for large documents (i.e, your I tunes file with lots of albums on or large picture file) it can take around 6 to even 10 minutes to transfer (depending on the size of the file). My music file had about 60 albums on, which took around 8 minutes to complete the transfer.

One problem I have with Freecom's 500GB Hard Drive is the fact that it is just a glorified Flash Drive. As mentioned it offers nothing more than a 1 GB Flash drive would. I would have liked a nice user interface where I could disperse certain computer files and find them and organise them easy enough, with sections for each file type or computer backed up. As it is I have to organise all the files as I would my desktop. Obviously this isn't a huge complaint, but one that would have made this Ext. Hard Drive even better.

As it stands the Freecom Mobile DriveClassic (a needlessly long name there) works very well. 500GB is more than enough to backup various computers and then some. However for 100 I expected more than a glorified Flash Drive. I would certainly suggest investigating others on the market however this Freecom does what it says on the tin, just not perfectly.

5 out of 5 stars Small, fast and Easy   October 2, 2008

Just what I wanted. An external drive which is:

* Small - I can fit it in my handbag
* Quick - it backs up items very fast
* Quiet - virtually silent unlike my last drive which was noisy
* Easy to use - just plug it in! I use a mac but have also used it on a PC
* Looks good - it won't win any style awards but it is smart

Excellent product and I am delighted with it. Would highly recommend.

I've been using a couple of Western Digital USB-powered passport drives recently so it was interesting to compare and contrast.

Firstly the Freecom is a bit of an ugly duckling in comparison to the stylish Passport drives but technically it appears to be more than a match for them. The Freecom housing is slightly bulkier but actually feels a smidge lighter.

I haven't done any quantifiable tests but the Freecom drive, which at 500GB is larger than the largest Passport available at 320GB, feels slightly quicker than the WD drives and certainly has no problem streaming media.

The CD-ROM supplied with the Freecom contains only the manual but no additional software, which is a bit of a disappointment. Previous Freecom hard drive products I've bought have included the NTI backup software which I consider to be very useful. The WD Passport drives come pre-loaded with syncing software, though I never really used it and when alls said and done these portable drives are probably used 99% of the time with drag and drop.

Something to note - there is a clear plastic wrap over the back end of the unit with cut-outs for the optional power connection (if your laptop USB ports are too weedy to power the harddrive - AC adapter not included but a nice touch to leave it as an option) and the mini-USB connection. I assumed this should be removed before usage but then why have the cut-outs? I've shifted almost 20GB of data back and forth during testing and didn't notice any discernible heat build-up so perhaps it's okay to leave it on - to keep dust out maybe?! There's no mention of it anywhere on the packaging or in the manual.

I've been a longtime fan of Freecom and their no-nonsense products and this is another great product, let down slightly by skimping on the software.
