Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
With its ultra-flat and shock-resistant design, the Toughdrive Pro 2.5" external hard drive is a compact storage solution that owes its performance to its Soft Silicon casing, internal anti-shock mechanism and silent cooling technology. Its large internal storage capacity lets you back up cumbersome data such as video or music files using a high transfer rate. Auto-powered with its retractable USB 2.0 port, the Toughdrive Pro 2.5" external hard drive does not need a power cable. The Toughdrive Pro 2.5" external hard drive is the mobile storage device par excellence.

1 out of 5 stars This drive DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY   July 31, 2008

I purchased this kind of drive without an external power supply since I wanted to use it with my laptop on the move. That meant I had to pay more for less storage which I was happy to do.

However, I found I was regularly getting errors from my drive. When I reported this to the support guys they said this was probably due to lack of power and sent me both an extra USB power cable and an external power supply.

If these had worked properly, I would still be annoyed as I wanted to use it as it was.

However, the drive continues to regularly give errors when using either the external power supply or the supplemtal USB power supply, although it does work slightly better.

In short, avoid.

1 out of 5 stars DID NOT WORK WITH MAC IBOOK!   May 31, 2008

I purchased this "Toughdrive" to store my ever-growing digital music collection. It seemed fine at first, but then began to work sporadically, often turning itself off. I emailed Freecom, who informed me it was a power related issue (they send you a free power adapter if you live in the UK). By this point, my Mac iBook wouldn't even detect that it was plugged in to the USB port. I got my power adapter, (which I had to buy from another company because I live outside the UK), and it STILL doesn't work. I want to return it, but can't because it has all my files on it. The entire endeavor has been a horrible waste of money. I would steer clear of this product if I were you!

3 out of 5 stars Good design -- but slow   May 24, 2008

Many external drives are simply a metal or plastic shell around a conventional desktop hard disk (or two), but the ToughDrive actually feels like it wasn't designed by the summer intern.

The form factor is just right; it'll fit neatly into the any pocket of any bag. This is perfect for anyone who actually wants to travel with their data.

Rubber bumpers around the edges help protect against shocks, though I doubt the top and bottom would stand up to any sort of penetrating impact (like the corner of a table).

It's basically silent, and there are no heat issues.

Unfortunately, this drive is SLOW. Really slow. Slower than treacle on a cold day. In my experience a typical USB 2.0 external drive sustains disk-to-disk write speeds of about 1 GB per min. This one doesn't even come close -- it's 3x or 4x slower at least, and the seek times suck as well. I wanted to use it as an auxiliary drive for my desktop with occasional travel, but after a few days of use I'm really doubting I bought the right product.

The blue LED connector is cute, but annoying. It will light up any darkened room, and flicker when the drive is in use. Blue LEDs are overused in general, but this is ridiculous.

In summary, if you just want some extra storage, go for one of the competitions ugly desktop products. If you want something to travel with your laptop, it's probably perfect.

2 out of 5 stars Crashes & Loses data! beware! nice design though!   April 3, 2008

Didn't buy it on amazon but got one of these. Nice slim design, very portable, plug and play type thing. Looks like it is a 'toughdrive' like advertised, but the software keeps crashing it and data is frequently lost in a "write error" going back to the shop I think as it is useless. Having a bad time of it with hard drives lately! :(
