1 out of 5 stars Don't touch with Barge Pole   August 26, 2008

I bought this based on Macworld review and the star rating and positive reviews I'd read on line on Amazon (although only the first few). Within 2 hours of use it just switched its off. Thought it might have been something I had done so mounted again & after that every time my Mac went into sleep mode it just switched itself off and disappeared from my desktop. And also when using Time Machine. Tried the online advice (frighteningly there was an awful lot of it with similar problems), which was to download the new driver from WD (Difficult enough as even WD don't refer you by the correct name for it). After that I lost all contact. Switched it on & nothing, apart from the nice light on the front of it. Tried changing to USB & nothing. Tried to get help from WD support (don't make me laugh) & nothing. Eventually 12 days later, and after I had returned it, I got some advice "Reset it". That was it. No how, or "if that doesn't work". WD advise that you shouldn't return it to store if you have trouble but contact the customer support which they give you free for 30 days from register of problem. But it might take that long to START getting reasonable answers. Also think the star system used for reviewing this product is misleading. If it dosn't work it's a "0" no matter what it's potential.
At the end of the day there seem to be enough people out there that have had a good experience: but I'm guessing 70% at best & 50% worst. UNFORTUNATELY even if there was a way to fix it, I've lost all confidence. So I can't recommend it, but my advice if you do buy it and you get any trouble early on, don't wait, just return it.

5 out of 5 stars Ideal for Time Machine   August 8, 2008

I've found this drive to be quiet and fast and really easy to use with Time Machine. Plugged it into my iMac, was asked whether I wanted to use it with Time Machine and away it went without any further intervention (in fact I was a bit disappointed that there was no tinkering...). A great buy.

1 out of 5 stars Worked great until it stopped working   August 5, 2008

I purchased this in march. looks great. quiet as a mouse. met all my needs: loved it.

UNTIL.....

yesterday... turned on my imac as normal...
... the indicator light on the front of the hard drive didn't come on.. hmmm
..No disk icon appeared on desktop...
..can still feel and hear that the hard drive is on.. and is receiving power.

Tested with F800 to 800, F800 to F400, usb and on another mac.

but to no joy....

after talking to the delightful chap at the help line, I am now browsing the web for a data recovery company..

and will shortly be looking for a new external hard drive.

4 out of 5 stars Great...but beware with intel Macs   July 31, 2008

I bought two of these to back up my movie and music collection and to replace the full disc previously used for Time Machine. I have an Intel iMac and the install process was easy as long as you follow the connection sequence as outlined by other reviewers and I was up and running in a matter of minutes, daisy chaining the two drives together via 800 Firewire.

I thought I would take a look at the included software and so opened the files on the drive. The backup software looked good and seemed to offer to backup data from external drive to external drive, something which Time Machine didn't do and so backed up my iPhoto library as a test.

Then the fun started. The software started a full scan of all drives without being asked to do so and told me it was 'securing the drive environment' or something like that and it was really slow as you would imagine across a 250 gb HD and my existing twin 500gb drives that the WD drives were replacing. After an hour I got bored and tried to quit.

It then hit me with a purchase screen to enter a registration code for the software or buy it online but wouldn't allow me to quit or force quit so I canceled and it carried on scanning.

Now I was really bored so I crash restarted the machine but the info box just came back up again and the most annoying thing was that it had placed itself over the hard drive icon and I could neither turn it off or drag it away...it just crunched away on and on....and I couldn't get to the hard drive to the software install

So I just physically removed all reference to the programme on the system via spotlight and again forced restart. This time the box was still there but the scan had stopped but would not let me quit the box.... annoying at best!

I then used the uninstaller but as I had physically moved files it got confused and crashed the system and I had to force quit the finder...

Finally, I started it in safe mode booting from the MAC install Cd and did another search for the software components this time it got them all and the machine re-started fine...phew...what a long-winded process.

Anyway, the moral of the story...check compatibility of the software before launching/installing and check purchase/licence details too...every bit of documentation I saw seemed to indicate the app was free but clearly not so.

But beside this ranting moan, these are great drives, Uber quiet (sometimes its difficult to know they are actually on if the light on the front didnt pulse slowly) and very fast on firewire 800 so no probs there... infact, does exactly what it says on the pack!!!! Cheers TW

1 out of 5 stars misleading   July 29, 2008
Annoyed

I was lead to believe that this hard drive had ports for firewire 400 and firewire 800. As the technical specs say "FireWire 400 and 800 - High-performance interfaces" this is not true as there are no firewire 400 interfaces.

For most people this probably won't cause much of a problem as it comes with a 6pin to 9pin cable so that you may plug into a firewire 400 port at the other end. But if like me you require the physical 400 port on the drive then this is a major problem.

Maybe some rewording is needed to make this clearer.
