Ruined by the software September 9, 2008 P. Bramhall (UK) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This device is easily the best music player on the market for the cost. I gave it 1* because the software that you have to use is shocking. The menu system within the device is the worst I have ever used and many of my friends simply cannot use it, but all agree it is a great bit of kit. Because this device only uses atrac not mp3 ,THIS IS NOT AN MP3 PLAYER by the way, you can only use Sonys own SonisStage and this is bad. It just will not work properly. All of the existing MP3 library in your PC needs converting to atrac. This takes a long time. Atrac is very good but there is a problem If I rip a CD using SonicStage it regularly only rips some songs, I re-rip with WMP or Real or iTunes etc and no problems. Many of my CD's, no matter how or when ripped, will not transfer using SonicStage. It feels like a beta product that is mowhere near ready for the public. There are more issues with compilation CD, CD with suites of songs, eg Oxford #suite Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 etc. This stupid software only notices the first and I assume thinks the rest are duplicates and ignores them. It feels like the software is assuming that I don't own my files and will not let me access many files. Even though the files are named/ listed in every other media player Sonicstage won't touch them. SonicStage seems to destroy WMP and Real. They fail if NW-HD1 is plugged in or if I have used SonicStage. I must logg off and start computer again. Pain in the rear You cannot buy this device until there is alternative software. I cannot stress enough just how big an issue this.
Proving a very expensive mistake November 11, 2007 Rufus (London) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
First off let me say that, physically, I found this a great product. However, the format of files that it uses makes it an extremely bad choice for anyone who thinks that they may outlive the player. Talking about formats of files may sound techy, but it isn't. This device uses a Sony format for files (ATRAC3) which no-one else uses. That means that files ripped using the software provided cannot be used with other devices. Whats more, it is impossible to convert them. During the time I have owned one of these, I have ripped in the region of 4,000 tracks from my CD collection (not something that takes 5 minutes to do). Thanks to Sony's stupid format and file protection, now that I come to change device, I have lost about 90% of them. This will happen to anyone buying this device using ATRAC3 format files. I strongly recommend buying something else if you have files that you want to keep - as Sony's format is not portable and you will lose your music collection.
NW-HD1 20GB July 24, 2006 C. Paul 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I am currently a Sony NW-HD1 owner, and I think that it is excellent value for money, the quality is good and I don't have any problems with the software. I was originally going to purchase an iPod but decided against it in the weight and size issue. The Sony device is not as heavy and you can also attach a neck strap to it (one of those things that USB discs come on)and wear it around your neck whilst doing aerobics etc. I have had mine now for almost 2yrs and it has not let me down yet. The battery life is excellent, I have not replaced it yet. It is easy to use. Although there are not many accessories to go with it I also use mine in my car using one of those tape connector things and the sound through my speakers is fantastic! Really I would given a second chance beween iPod and Sony choose the Sony again.
Quality kit October 22, 2005 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Battery life and sound quality are excellent. It was bundled with Sony's own Sonic Stage software which does the job, althought is quite slow to load. The docking station which was included is of very good quality and makes it an easy matter to hook up via USB. I've also used the unit on occasion as an external hard disk for copying files around - works without issue via USB connection. If battery life is important to you then give serious consideration to this model. A quality piece of kit.
What item are all the other customers reviewing? May 30, 2005 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
This is a good buy in my opinion: - Huge memory (up to 13,000 tracks) - Good sound quality - I think its loud enough - Easy enough to navigate your way around the features. - There is nothing wrong with the Sonicstage software (simple to use and efficient) - Headphones are of a good quality - You do need to take the cradle and charger if travelling (but lets face it - its not as if they are either large or heavy) - EASILY AS GOOD AS ANY OTHER 20GB PRODUCT ON THE MARKET!True enough, the screen does scratch relatively easily, but the scratches are barely noticeable, and take nothing away from the quality of this product. Anyone rating this product below 4stars is just being picky!!!
