Jaw droppingly disappointing. October 31, 2007 Mr. Hm Bennett (London) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Sometimes you read reviews written by other people about a product you own and wonder why they can think and feel so differently to you. This item is one of those - I see loads of positive reviews for this system when I found it to be cheap, nasty and just not good enough. From the moment I opened the packaging my heart sank - these speakers are very small (they are travel speakers after all) - make sure you have read the dimensions PROPERLY before you buy. You have been warned. Now,it's akin to a law of physics that small speakers = bad sound so I wondered what magic had been performed by JBL on these little chaps. Unfortunately, no rabbits were pulled out of any hats. The volume is ridiculously poor; I bought these because the volume from my laptop wasn't good enough. Of course, I found that my laptop was LOUDER, BASSIER and LESS DISTORTED than these speakers (my laptop is a Vaio that is no great shakes in the sound department). This was on mains power of course; on battery, they were even worse!! So I just sent them back - usual first-rate Amazon refund service. Please think before you buy - not everything you read is true - these are a product to be bought in desperation when you have no other choice. You do have a choice - there are hundreds of other choices on Amazon alone. And finally, be careful out there; it is unfortunate but true that some people can be pleased with VERY poor quality stuff. Their needs and expectations may be very different to yours. I would have given a '0' here, if I could have done.
Great sound that takes up little space October 25, 2007 B. D. Cash (UK) I can't add too much to the other reviews except to say that I've had these speakers for two years and take them travelling with me. On my travels, many people have commented on how good the sound is from them. They are not amazingly loud - although my 5G ipod might be to blame here - but there is plenty of sound to fill a room. As a bonus, you can run them off batteries, too. I'll be looking to update my ipod but I won't be changing these speakers
Audio Excellence April 7, 2007 Delbut (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The JBL Ontour arrived earlier than the time frame which I was really impressed with. As for the product itself I am really pleased with it. The exterior is extremely stylish and when you open the cover it is again aesthetically pleasing. As for the audio quality, its pretty amazing and the clarity is great. I am listening to it as I am writing this review and for the price it is amazing. Amazon sell this product for a relitavely cheap price compared with other sellers such as dabs and richer sounds. A couple of cons though, the design, the location of the input jack and power input are on the rear and its hard to plug these in due to this location. That design fault has taken the star rating down a notch for me but nevertheless a great sounding portable speaker system which I shall be making use of when chillin with my homies later in the summer :)
Good for laptop use too December 30, 2006 Sky (London, UK) 1 out of 6 found this review helpful
As well as I-PODs it could be used for laptops too. For me a 'sony PSP USB adaptor' worked (available from Amazon) and cut the wire and reversed the polarity and then used 'heat-shrink sleeving' etc. The orange light flashes (since you are running on 5V instead of 6V but it still worked completely fine for me anyway.
Very good audio, but has some design flaws September 25, 2006 John (SWINDON, Wiltshire United Kingdom) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
This system came in a surprisingly large box. My first impression was of a very well-built unit which is surprisingly solid and heavy for its size. The audio quality is very good, but the size and weight are more than I expected for a high-priced unit. I rapidly discovered the drawbacks mentioned by others, such as the inability to switch off the unit without removing the cables (currently I have the mains power disconnected, but it is flashing the orange light to indicate low voltage, but since the audio is also disconnected it should have, based on the manufacturers claims, the intelligence to go to sleep). Then there is the sliding cover which is reluctant to stay in the fully open position. And another glitch is that the expternal power connector has the opposite polarity to most other equipment. OK, the supplied power adaptor is very lightweight, but the mobile traveller wants to be able to cut back on the number of power adaptors. Surprisingly, there is no USB power cable in the package to enable computer users to make use of the USB power source.
