Exelent radio with a few flaws July 2, 2008 Mr. R. Mcdonald (UK) In many ways this is an excellent radio. It plays media streams efficiently and the controls are (for the most part) easy to use and intuitive. I have gotten grate enjoyment out of listening to it, and I would highly recommend it. That is why Im giving it 4 stars. However, there are a few issues that you should know about before you buy it. 1)Out of the box, the radio will only accept an open network, or the very unsecure and old WEP security setting. However, once you have upgraded to the latest version (which is done automatically) you can use the better WPE 2 standard. NOTE!! It will not accept WPE!! Only WPE2. Some of my wireless devices are now completely useless because they are not WPE2 compatible. So keep that in mind. 2)The sound quality is good but bassy. There is a dedicated bass speaker at the back of the unit. This gives an excellent bass sound but it tends to distort the higher frequencies when the volume gets too loud. There is no way to adjust the EQ either, so you cant turn the bass down a bit. 3)Trying to get the music from my computer to play on the radio was a bit of a chore. First of all, Windows Media Player and ITunes did not work, either because the bit of software I needed didnt work, or I couldnt download it, or, in the case of iTunes, because the radio didnt recognise the latest version. I eventually got it working with a combination of iTunes and a piece of software called firefly. This works fine, but It would be nice if I could add more than 1 folder. I keep my music and audio books in 2 separate places. So I have to continually swap folders. 4)This really isnt the radios fault, but some internet radio stations are highly unreliable. As I write this, I am unable to play BBC 1, 2, 3 or 4. Not sure why. Other than that, this is a very good looking radio. There are 1000s of stations. If you find a radio station that isnt on there, you can add it yourself. There is a UK plug and an international plug so I can use it in the bathroom and plug it into the shaver socket. The AM/FM tuner is useful if your wireless network goes down or a radio station wont load.
My new radio player June 13, 2008 Mr. J. Clements (cardiff,uk) I bought this unit becuase my brother in law recommended it. This was to be a replacement for a netgear mp101 that blew on me. So it looks nice and it sits on top of my fridge rather nicely. Sound quality is good for such a small unit, and setting it up to communicate with my wireless network was no problem at all. So I now have a number of local radio stations preset, plus the option of listening to lots and lots of internet radio stations. This unit also allows you to stream your mp3/wma files, and it's happy if you use windows media player or even itunes, both of these programs found my soundbridge box. I also have a NAS drive running twonky media player and again the soundbridge sees this and plays all the files on it with no problems. With my old mp101 i was forever losing the wireless connection, so far with this piece of kit i have had no such issues. It really is a good radio/streaming solution and i would recommend it to you, as it was recommended to me. JC
Fantastic Radio Forget DAB This is the way. March 31, 2008 D. Fielding (East Midlands, UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a Great Radio, I admit it was a bit of a pain to setup on my wireless (I use WPA/WPA2 encryption) So after switching it to WEP and letting it update itself to the latest firmware which supports WPA then switching back to WPA on the router, it connected and streamed radio stations with the clarity of the DAB radio I have. The searching for stations via the radio is a little slow but very simple to use, but use the web interface and it becomes a whole new experience allowing you to change stations and setup your favourites at the click of the mouse. If you're faced with the choice of a DAB radio or this radio I would recommend the Soundbridge as it is far superior to the DAB ones.
Soudbridge Radio- Best I have tried so far March 5, 2008 SHA1 (UK) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have used a number of internet radios before and this is by far the best. The sound quality is superb for a small unit like this.Even weaker statons sound quite good. One major advantage of this radio is the speed of response. My other internet radios are quite slow in bufferig and producing playlists etc. This one can browse through large lists of radio stations and your music collecton in the PC very quickly and therefore much pleasant in use. The manufaturer has released the remote control codes and it allows others to write software to control the radio from the PC or a PDA using pocket PC operatng system. I am using a free software package downloaded from the internet to my Pocket PDA to control the radio. It allows you to browse through hunreds of radio stations on the PDA screen and play them on the radio. Therefore the PDA is acting like a very sophisicated remote control.Controls are activated via the wireless network and therere the PDA has to be conected to your wireless network. All info availale in ROKU radio user forums. Fantastic product at a bargain price. Highly recommended at this price.
Rock solid sound and build March 2, 2008 Chang K. Park (UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
In an age of cheaply made disposible electronics this is a breath of fresh air. Although the unit is compact, you can feel the weight of the high quality transformers and speaker magnets that are responsible for the remarkable sound quality. A nice touch is an SD card slot so you can play a MP3 compilation on it without doing it through your computer and WiFi. The touch and feel of the buttons and dials take you back to a bygone (and more expensive) era of electronics. It has a few flaws: the setup requires a bit of IT literacy, the interface and menus could be better, there is no audio in (a shame cos the speakers are brilliant), it doesn't support realplayer format. But even considering these, at the price it's a steal.
