5 out of 5 stars Great for media transfers!   October 27, 2006

The main reason for buying this recorder was to reduce the pile of VHS tapes so they can be thrown or stored in the attic. This recorder achieves this admirably. Simply by connecting a VHS player to the SCART input, recording is simplicity itself. Select SCART as the source and press the red button when you are at the point point you want to record. You may need to download the latest firmware and modify it to unlock any input source limitations. The liteon website has adquate instructions to upgrade the firmware - but remember to unlock the firmware and use the modified version for the upgrade.
Search for "liteon ILO" to find the tool.

My secondary reason for purchasing this recorder is to replace the VHS recorder completely. VideoPLUS works fine, but you will need to rename the recording on HDD to correctly label it. The recorder can use the internal TV receiver or you can plug you satellite/freeview decoder into the scart input, making sure you select the correct input source for the recording.

Documentation isn't bad, but I think just using the device will get you familiar with it more quickly. Haven't tried uploading DV video yet, but have no reason to expect any problems with this either.

Overall, one happy customer!

5 out of 5 stars Lite-On LVW 5045GDL+ I recommend this machine   September 25, 2006

I bought the Lite-On LVW 5045GDL+ at the beginning of this year and have had no problems using it. The recording is easy to use, whether it is to Hard drive or DVD. I have transferred some of my old VHSc home videos to the HDD, edited them and then copied them to DVD with no problems.

I must admit I have NOT performed a firmware upgrade proferring to follow the old saying of "if it ain't broke, then don't touch it".

With regards to "philjones15" review of connecting freeview - you should be able to see all your regular terrestrial channels 1-5 as follows BBC1, BBC2, ITV1, CH4 and CH5, if you normally receive CH5 through your tv.

Once you connect in your Freeview box you need to tune Freeview to another channel. For my convenience, I tuned my Freeview decoder into CH6.

Ensure you follow the manual to set your connections up as in Step 4 "Connecting the Decoder". See the NOTE: that is included in Step 4 that says "During recording, if you have problems watching programmes imported via the decoder, you can press TV/MODE to switch to the "SCART Bypass" mode. However, you need to first activate the feature through Setup ->TV Tuner -> TV MODE. If you still have problems, see the next part of the NOTE that mentions the SCART cable not being able to detect all signals, and try/buy another Scart cable.

I hope this is what you meant by "it only sees one channel". The only other thing you might mean is that the Freeview box is just a single tuner, therefore only one programme can be recorded from it at a time while watching one of the terrestrial channels 1-5. There are other recorders out there now that have two Freeview tuners built in that will allow you to record one channel and watch another (ie: watch E4 while recording More 4) so if this is what you wanted - then, yes, you have bought the wrong box because the LVW 5045GDL+ only has a single tuner.

However, to conclude I thoroughly recommend the Lite-On LVW 5045GDL+. It does what I bought it for and I am happy with it. Good Luck !!

3 out of 5 stars How do you do timned recording of Freeview programmes   August 21, 2006

Help! I bought this machine in anticipation of being able to queue up stacks of programmes to record from E4, More 4, and the other decent freeview channels. But, when I connect my Freeview box to the DVD, it only sees one channel!

Have I bought the wrong box? Am I too stupid to understand the manual (possible, but I like to think unlikely)? Is there anyone out there who has solved this problem?

1 out of 5 stars So many Locked-up   July 9, 2006

I have got two of this machine for the past two months and have had enough troubles with them.

The first one had critical problem with HDD and as HDD clashed, I have lost all my programs stored.

The second one is hopeless on Dvix playback and absolutely no chance of transferring Dvixs onto HDD.

In addition I have had intermittent Locked-ups while playing Divxs & copying from DVDs/Divx to HDD & etc.

Set-up is so complicated and you need to keep going back and checking every step in the user manual and even this user manual is not easy to understand in some parts.

I will send it back now for refund.

1 out of 5 stars Whatever you do don't buy a Lite-on!   June 29, 2006

I bought my Liteon DVD recorder as it seem to have everything I could ever want, the only trouble is it does not do anything well.

The clock gains 5 minutes per month. When you switch it on it takes nearly 2 minutes to become operational. When you press a button on either the remote or the unit itself it takes an nearly a minute for anything to happen. When playing pre-recorded DVD's it has a nasty habit of locking up repeatedly resulting in me having to switch it off at the mains and then having to wait for the hard disc check function to run.

When you initially phone the service department they only suggest that you should update the firmware which in my case I did on four occasions with no improvement at all.

I have just telephoned the service department and they have at last agreed to collect the unit for repair but have warned me I will be without the unit for at least 3 WEEKS as they are inundated with defective units and they can't get spare parts.

Please don't make the same mistake as I did. The simple message is whatever you do don't buy a Liteon!
