4 out of 5 stars Good, but room for improvement   March 20, 2007

The picture and sound quality (with close-fitting earphones) are both very good. It plays region 1 and region 2 DVDs with no problem. But there are shortcomings. There appears to be no way to adjust the aspect ratio and classic 5:4 pictures are distorted (too wide). Technically it is sound but the ergonomics need more attention. The screen, being hinged, is awkward to open. (finger-slots at the sides would improve this). The labelling of the controls is meaningless and the handbook is next to useless so that the owner must proceed by trial-and-error. Not particularly good value at the moment but later marks will probably improve.

I was was chuffed to receive this at xmas - although hadn't realised the size was small laptop - however purchased this to use upstairs as a bedroom tv (with travel options) after reading the above reviews and adding this as my preferred choice.

Downsizes (easier to explain)
------------------------------
~ travel bag (the strap runs across the middle of the cd opening - so you either can't attach it properly, or you have to undo it it the on-move option, and cos of the size there's not many alternatives out there)

~ scart cable attachment, is one of those combined ones, and ends in the 3 leads (which if you get the maplin scart adapter does work nicely with a videosender). So this isn't a downside - really (as long as you remember to take the adapter lead with you to plug into anything else, like a big tv when it's the usual dvd player isn't mulit-region or is broke).

~ noise it's louder than a 5 yr old one - especially noticeable when headphones are on, you have a quiet point in the film and un-scary noise of technology whiring. So mines going back - as think this is a faulty one.

~ connectively - haven't yet tried the multi-region, but did plug in my creative mp3 player (muvo) to be met with a 4 folders (i had 10 on the root) none of which would either open or play!, so maybe this needs a 'file 'usb stick. tried to play some mp video file - and guess what - again it didn't like it.

~ visuals. I find that the screen sometimes has a grey tint to it that isn't removed by the playing of the contrast etc. Seems worse in some lights.

~ weight, although not excessive, you don't want to spend ages with it on your lap. But its very stable when nearly half of it fits sticks out from your bedside table.

~ the buttons. The power button is on the left side and slides (behind it are the two headphone sockets). The left side has a central button with a button ring around it. Whereas the right has the look of a ring but requires the individual buttons to be pressed. (fiddly esp in poor light)

~ cd screen shows basic info. Track no/out of x tracks and point (time) of track, white text on blue background - but not really a downside i suppose.

SO
---
Essentially i am returning mine because of the noise when it functions (with the dvd/cd disc option).(which has increased since receiving it as a present), but i don't know whether i can live without the remote volume option (which annoys me greatly) as the best place for it (on the otherside of the room opposite the bed) actually means we have to get up anytime you want to mess with the volume, plus also there's no remote power/standby option really makes me feel that these two buttons on the otherwise full remote lets this otherwise fab player down.
I have tried to be objective without sermonising, but wanted others to have the info that would have helped me making my choices.

Oh and FYI: the standby power is good, and the remote takes those little button batteries. The packaging is excellent as is the selection of cables that come with it (power, car power, scart adapter, headphones + remote)

Please let me know if anyone else has found a solution for anything I've mentioned above.

If you think made in China means "Cheap quality". I can tell you that is wrong and not true. Chinese make has the most highly technical expertise in the world, for example 'AIGO' 'SHINCO' 'TCL' 'HUMAX'.
When I travel to China I always buy a few of the latest gargets. It's much more fun than iPOD or PSP. I recently bought a AIGO Multie Media player with 300GB hard drive, big screen, very light, touch screen, 23 different languages. You can download more than 100 movies, I just love it, I already ditched my ipod and psp. Anyway you just can't believe how amazing it is. My friends thought it was made in JAPAN, but I told them it is made in China. Last mouth I bought a couple of 'AIGO' video watches for my kids, they love them. You can download movies and MP3/MP4. I also bought a 12" screen 'SHINCO' Portable Player for myself and you can play all the different types of disc on this dvd. I highly recommend this 'SHINCO' Portable Player to everyone.

I have been looking for a large screen DVD player I decided to take the plunge and Buy the Shinco sdp 2002 as I couldnt find any rival brands who done a 12" screen.
When I received delivery I wasn't disappointed it was exactly what I was looking for.My kids love it I have 3 kinds and the 12" screen is sufficient for all 3 in the back of car and no complaints and the twin headphone sockets help it was truly heaven sent.Picture quality is of the highest quality my only qualm is that the majority of the unit is plastic but for the price who can complain it is still a good looking unit also did I mention it has a flip screen which can be folded pushed forward , height adjusted something which is very useful when space is a issue.I have used it myself and found that it takes all my recordable media that I have burned them my pc I even tried some DVDs that I bought a while ago but couldn't play them as they where out of region. It also has USB port very handy it accepts my USB flash pen drive without any problems.I am quite a fan of all the latest gadgets and I hold the Shinco in my top 10 for sure.If you're looking for big screen DVD player you can't go wrong with Shinco.I later found out Shinco manufacture 2/3 s of all the worlds portable DVD players including for brands like Phillips & Toshiba a very happy customer indeed.
