Review of Frecom 350 December 24, 2007 R. Bull (Berkshire, UK) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I've been looking for a while for this type of product. Key factors for me were reliability of streaming, quality of wireless networking and the variety of media files that can be played and that it is not a complex process to just do those straightforward things such as showing the relatives the latest photos. This product fits all those factors with 5 stars, and the fact that it has a 500 GB drive is an added bonus as you dont need to have the PCs on to use it. Specifically: Setup is straightforward, it connected to our home network with no trouble, and I get typically 90% wireless strength through several walls from our wireless router. The NDAS software has to be installed on each PC that wishes to access it. The software treats the device as a SCSI drive and has an excellent feature in that if the device were temporarily unavilable while you are copying to it, (eg, it gets accidently switched off) you have about a minute up to which it will recover the connection and continue copying. The remote and the control buttons took a little getting used to but is in fact quite intuitive and easy to use. I had read a few reviews stating that the remote was not so friendly, but I have seen no evidence of any issues with it. The device can connect to the internet to access ftp sites and can also play digital radio channels. I didnt recognise any of the channels and most of them are of type "muzac" broadcasts. The only avi files I couldnt get it to play were those from our digital cameras - however, I convert those to mpegs using the Prism utility from NCH Software - takes but a few minutes to do. The software update process does require you download the files from a web site on your PC and then update via the USB connection. Its all very straightforward. If I had to add one further feature to this device to be superb - it if were possible to record from digital TV as well. Having the 500GB disk would be really useful for that. Well done Freecom - very well thought out and a good product.
