no, no, NO! June 7, 2008 Mr. Andrew Edmiston (Bournemouth, UK.) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this with my logitech z2300's, thinking it would improve the clarity of the speakers. Firstly, the speakers are great, but I plugged in the x-thingy, and it destroyed the treble speakers. It started making that sound you get if the cones are damaged. I thought that the system was broken, but unplugged the x-thing, and the speakers sounded normal. Plugged the x-thing in again, and the speakers went back to sounding broken. I don't know if this is because I've set it up wrong, but it seems to be set up correctly. Plus, you don't notice that much of an improvement. I'm sending it back. There's no point to be honest, the z2300's are a perfect speaker set-up anyway, and this just seems to ruin it.
Noisy at low volumes January 16, 2008 Romanski 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
At low volumes Xmod generates a very noticeable amount of hiss, sounds kind of like quantization noise. This noise is only heard when some sound is actually coming out of the headphones. When no sound is being played no such noise is heard. At mid and high volumes this noise is drowned in the sound. Xmod also produces a rather quiet but still noticeable hiss at all times - even on "mute". Overall, highly disappointed - my previous onboard AC97 did better than this. But if you don't care about low volumes or slight hissing - it's actually quite nice - the volume knob is very convenient.
Great Piece of kit, No AC adaptor is a let down January 3, 2008 C. G. WILLIAMS (Reading UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
this truly is an amazing piece of audio excellence!! this is even compatable with sonys ATRAC3 and ATRAC3Plus compressed files!! but please use some quality headphones im using sony MDR-SA1000 sounds amazing on them. the detail lost restored i don't know how creative have done this but its quite amazing! the device looks solid and well built. only gripe is no AC adaptor inculded! if you want one it will cost you 20+ from creative direct no that great in my opnion and if youre planning to use the device in your car make sure you get a in car usd charger thats 1000MAh and is 5v otherwise the device wont work!

It is not possible to "Restore" detail that is lost in mp3 compression. That detail is lost. Notice that the ad says "Restore SPARKLE" what it should say is "Adds sparkle". In other words, the sound may be brighter, but it is LOWER QUALITY again than what is left by the mp3 compression. I don't know how they justify the claim of "on a par with studio quality". This is AT BEST a highly optimistic claim. However, if you are listening to mp3s, you probably don't mind these technical points.
Nice gadget July 19, 2007 A Bloke (London, England) Yup, nice little piece of kit. Yes, it means more wires and stuff, but it actually works well. You have to configure your computer to divert sound to it first though. I want to use it through my mac airport express but I now need to buy a separate power supply to feed it. When it's hooked up to your pooter, it draws power from the USB port. I tried to use the USB on the airport express, but even though it receives power, the unit keeps trying to get music out of the printer facility. There is none there. I purchased my X-mod on a whim from PC World for 29.99. I see that it sells for 50- 60 in other places... hmmm. The technology works by using subtle reverb type techniques (apparently) to give the illusion of 9 speaker surround sound. Well, I don't know about the supposed "better than studio quality" but it certainly kicks arse. I keep the two fuctions whacked way up. It's sexy that way. However, if you turn them off, the sound is actually poorer than if you were going straight from output to headphones. Maybe that was engineered to make you see the effect difference as vaster. Anyhow, the kit is good, it's white and looks like all the other gear you've been collecting, so go and collect this as well.
