VLANs flaky January 5, 2008 R. Vanden Driesen (Australia) This machine is unreliable when using more than one VLAN with the current firmware. That makes it relatively useless as a smart switch. Read other reviews.
Plug and play with impressive performance September 25, 2007 D. Piggott (London, UK) For small and medium sized businesses looking for performance this is a great unit at a great price. Setup is quick and easy with good instructions. Product also had a good web interface for management make it easy for a network administrator to manage.
Performance without the fuss September 25, 2007 K. W. Blowing As an SME we want our coms to be easy to setup and manage without sacrificing performance. The GS724T with it's web interface and management options makes it a simple task to configure. Our network traffic includes a lot of multi-media and images and this unit gives us maximum performance without breaking the bank.
Easy to use Layer 2 Switch September 13, 2007 G. Howell (Wales, UK) I have been looking for an easy to use, managed layer 2 switch for a while and I think I've found one in the Netgear GS724T. This unit from their professional Prosafe range has 24 x 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet ports with the option of a dual fibre back plane running at 48Gbps. The beauty with this switch is all the setup is performed via its built-in web interface, which means I didn't have to learn endless command lines instructions. It really is point, click and do. In my installation, I needed to separate three different departments into their own virtual network (VLANs). I plugged all of the network devices in the switch and using the web interface told the switch which VLAN each port (device) belonged too. So all of my developers were put in VLAN2, my sales in VLAN3 and accounts in VLAN4. Basically devices within the same VLAN could talk to each other, but not to the others, which keeps the different groups (VLANs) private to each other. Just what I needed. One of the problems with VLANS and switches is that it is difficult (by design) to use a packet sniffer to monitor packets from the other ports when you need to debug something. This switch has the ability to 'copy' packets from live ports to a monitoring port, so if you need to see the packets from one machine for some reason, you can 'copy' them to your monitoring device without unplugging the live port, very handy and more importantly, the device (or user) is not disconnected during your tests. Another feature that I think will be useful is something called quality of service (QoS). You can set specific ports a priority (low, medium, normal and high) so if you have a user who is using voice or video over the network (say your boss), you can setup their connection so their traffic takes priority over other ports (users). Finally, I noticed that Netgear has recently upgraded their warranty, so I now get a full lifetime warranty for the unit. Happy days. Netgear call the GS724T a 'smart managed switch'. It's pretty smart, that's for sure and easy to use for normal administrators. Recommended.
