Click, Click Bang goes my data June 18, 2008 Chapman Baxter (Granada, Spain) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Lasted 5 days, then a cyclic redundancy error. I did a windows disk check (which took about 5 hours) then returned to find the machine hung at the bios stage with the drive emitting the dreaded mechanical click, click, click sound. Totally dead from that point. Luckily most of what was on the drive was backed up elsewhere, just lost about 100 photos and a few hours of my time. I had a bad feeling about it and wanted to give it a few weeks before I committed to important data. I'm going back to Western Digital (2 drives still going strong after 4 and 6 years). Samsung should go back to making fridges/TVs (and the million other types of product they make) - leave this specialist field to specialist companies. Be Warned If You Value Your Data!

Dead On Arrival May 12, 2008 Mr. M. J. Chadwick 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I should have listened to the other reviewers here!! I will not buy fragile PC equipment through Amazon again! The drive arrived in a box big enough to carry 10 hard drives and when I felt the contents sliding around inside my heart sank. Sure enough after opening the box the drive sat inside with just a jiffy bag for protection. This equates to putting an egg in a biscuit tin and posting it through the mail and expecting The Royal Mail to treat it is if it were an unexploded bomb - i.e. not a chance in hell!! So with much trepidation I attached the drive and started copying my small 36Gb drive over to the new drive - CLICK! CLICK! CLICK! - reboot - XP needs to do a consistency check - corrupt indexes - orphaned files - indexes being recreated - basically 1 stuffed hard drive. This was my second spinpoint and I only bought from Amazon to save a few pounds - lesson learnt, buy from the shops that deal with hardware properly. Needless to say the drive is on it's way back and compensation is being sought!
Terrible packaging by Amazon May 1, 2008 IT professional 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Got the drive this moring from the postman - not a courier. Not a good start! The drive had come packed in a cardboard folder, with no bubblewrap or peanuts and which wasn't even selotaped at the ends, thus the hard drive had slipped out of the folder and was sitting in the bottom of the postmans bag...I almost refused delivery there and then! But I duly connected it to my computer to check it and it instantly began wurring, almost moaning...there's no way I'd allow my precious data to be kept on this drive. Its a disaster waiting to happen! Sent back that day!! Amazon - how can you ship fragile OEM hard drives in basic cardboard folders?? Everyone else ships them by courier in properly secure and padded boxes. I can't believe I paid 5 shipping for a cardboard folder, which wasn't even selotaped at the ends!!! Shame on you Amazon - I'll never buy electronics from here again!
Unreliable, limited warranty says it all. April 14, 2008 Mr. J. Cooke 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Very fast but who cares about a millisecond? Reliability is most important. If you get this drive, expect to use your backups sooner than expected or lose your data! Mine died after 8 months use. Will not go Samsung for hard disk again. Warranty = 1 year (or is it 18 months?) compared to Seagate's 5 YEARS! That says it all for me. That and the fact all my old Seagate drives are still working and this one is dead in the water. For a little extra you can get a faster Seagate 32MB cache which as well as being more reliable is faster to boot (5.9 in Vista). EDIT: Samsung have a longer warranty than I thought, although still not the 5 years of Seagate. Have just used Samsung's returns company REXO who sent me a replacement in 3 days. Very fast, efficient and easy to do. I have to say I'm a happy camper again, and I'd consider buying Samsung again for some purposes. That said, I'll be making backups a lot more often than before, and not just with Samsung drives, and it will take a lot to beat Seagate's 5 year warranty.
