Product Description The LS external DVD writer employs the very best of Freecom technology, enabling you to burn your data onto dual-layer DVDs. It also features LightScribe labelling technology, which burns a perfect label directly onto your disc, and efficiently saves and archives your documents. With this writer, you can save up to 8.5 GB of data onto one dual-layer DVD in just a few minutes! Extremely quick off the mark, the LS has a record-breaking writing speed of 48x to CD and 20x to DVD, and is very easy to use thanks to its USB 2.0 port, which allows you to save your data to CD or DVD.

Great value for money, does what it say's on the tin! July 19, 2008 D. Moore (Lowestoft, UK)
This is a great little DVD drive...well, little-not really. It does seem quite on the bulky side-but no more than my previous 'LaCie' external drive. The outer casing on this unit does seem a little 'plastic-y', but thats the only real downside. And as it just sits tucked away on the computer stand you're not always fiddling with it anyway-so it doesn't matter. The main reasons for me buying an external DVD drive were: 1) To enable me to backup my entire iTunes Library, 2) Backups of my photography (i have a D-SLR and take alot of photo's!). How it performed... 1) I clicked backup entire library. I have around 60gb of music on an external HD, so knew it would take a while. The actual task took just over an hour and a half, and throughout the whole task, the only time the burner slowed down was to change the DVD. Once it was burning, it maintained it's speed. Very impressed, my LaCie didn't do this. It's also the same with burning CD's, and importing-it maintains a constant speed. I don't know if this is what most people experience with their drives, but my LaCie never behaved like this in it's 4 year life. 2) I was fed up going to Motorsports, taking loads of photo's over a weekend, and having to spread them across 3 or 4 CD's. I now burn everything in one go on a DVD, and it's faultless (touchwood!), and quick too. I'm using the product on an Aluminium Intel iMac-it does have an internal DVD drive, but it's not as quick as the Freecom. I find it's always handy to have a quick external option. Plus, i can use it on my old G4 iBook with no probs too, which is good as the iBook only has a DVD-rom. Overall, a great purchase. How long it will last-i've no idea. My Lacie was getting used 2 or 3 times a day, reading or burning, and it lasted 4 years, so had a good stint-so the Freecom has a standard to reach.
Good value June 25, 2008 M. Carver Esq (Rotherham) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Great unit, as with some of the other reviewers, I did not use the software that came with the product I just plugged it in and my 3 year old lap top recognised it(windows xp).I have used Nero to create a DVD slide show and Fireman to make a data cd and also to back up 7gb onto a dual layer DVD no problems with any of the systems picking up the unit. I am looking for an external hard drive and Freecom is high on my list.
This model is not suitable for Mac June 7, 2008 J. W. Fernandez 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I suspect this would be a good buy but despite reviews this version is not suitable for Mac. Freecom sell another model which is apparently compatible. Very pleased however with Amazon returns policy - very quick and efficient and I received refund within a few days of returning the item.
Just what I wanted June 5, 2008 pensive pete (South Yorkshire U K) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Very pleased with my DVD writer. Bought this one after reading all the other good reviews. I too just plugged it in . My Real Player automatically downloaded the neccessary software (Roxio). Just made my first DVD and played it on T V. which is just what I wanted - to be able to download video clips from Youtube etc and play them on T V. - Great.
Are Amazon product descriptions always accurate? June 2, 2008 AnneC (UK) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
The DVD/CD writer works fine and the software loaded without problem but where is the Lightscribe feature mentioned in the product description? Or have I misunderstood what this meant?
