5 out of 5 stars Best mouse I've ever bought   September 16, 2008
Andrew.R
I already owned a Microsoft optical notebook mouse 3000 wired. The size of notebook mice was a welcome change from a desktop mouse as there is less strain on the back my hand. Also, the acceleration curves are setup so that the mouse moves more quickly over the screen. On high resolution displays, this makes a big difference.

One issue with the 3000 was that the scroll wheel was too fluid. This is fine for scrolling down pages but it's not good for applications like FPS games where you often use the scroll wheel to change weapon. A smooth scroller means you often overshoot your selection. You do hear the clicks when you scroll with the 5000 but it's faint.

The 3000 also had a very stiff middle click - so much that I actually had to program the side button to do this job.

With these two flaws, it was just short of an ideal mouse.

This mouse corrected both these issues for me so now I get my middle-click back and a reliable scroller.

The bluetooth hasn't lagged or dropped out for me. I even tested it from across the room and it moves around fine. No annoying lights on it either as it is laser.

The only thing I didn't expect is that I received one with black buttons, not white like it shows in the picture. I prefer the black so it was a good surprise but it's a warning in case you actually want the white one.

The price is excellent and it was delivered in one day.

It came recorded delivery in an envelope, with no instructions or drivers but with 2 batteries. Since it worked fine, this really wasn't an issue and it means no unnecessary boxes lying around.

If you want to set it up on a Mac, it will take the same configuration as you setup for a Mighty Mouse. So plug-in a Mighty Mouse, configure the 3rd, 4th buttons, pull it out and the Microsoft one will use those settings. You can probably use the intellipoint software from Microsoft's website if you don't have a Mighty Mouse.

I was considering the Logitech VX Nano before buying this but it comes with a USB receiver. This is bluetooth and all the machines I use have bluetooth internal so there's no chance I will forget a small receiver. This mouse is also cheaper and it looks better than any of Logitech's bluetooth models. If Logitech had a bluetooth VX Nano, I probably would have bought it but they don't.

This mouse is also missing the left-right tilt on the wheel that the 3000 had so no side scrolling. I hardly used that feature anyway and shift-scroll goes left-right on the Mac at the full speed of the scroll wheel.

I have yet to check battery life but for weight, size, price, responsiveness, this is the best mouse I have ever had. Very highly recommended for desktop and notebook users.

EDIT:

One annoying problem with this mouse is it only pairs with one computer at a time. This means that if you want to use the mouse with multiple machines, you will have to pair the mouse up every time you switch machine. On a Mac, there is a fairly easy way to do this without using a wired mouse:

Setup the bluetooth menu to be on the menu bar. When no mouse is connected, hit ctrl-F8 (ctrl-fn-F8 on the new ones) and this will focus the menu bar on the right. Then just navigate to setup bluetooth device, push and hold the little button on the bottom of the mouse until it flashes and it will detect it.

To go via the system prefs, use ctrl-F2 to get to the Apple menu, open system prefs and hit tab to get to the icons. If it won't switch, you need to hit ctrl-F7 to allow full keyboard access. Then move to the bluetooth icon and hit spacebar. Keep tabbing to get to the set up device button.

The mouse I received also has a piece rattling inside. It's not a big problem really as the mouse seems to be working fine.

I have experienced some dropouts with the mouse but I think it's just going to sleep after not being used for a while to save battery. This happens if I type a lot on the keyboard and don't move the mouse.

The main buttons aren't quite as nice as the other mice I've used. They seem to be more spongy so it's harder to press them and hold them without accidentally letting the button come up too far. It makes for quieter clicks though.

After discovering these flaws, I still think it's a great mouse but I would probably reduce the score from 5/5 to 4/5.

4 out of 5 stars Overall, very impressed.   August 27, 2008

Having ordered this, late on a tuesday night prior to a bank holiday, i was delighted to find it waiting for me when i got back from a short holiday over the weekend despite estimated dispatch date of the tuesday after the bank holiday. Very Impressed amazon, well done!

As to the product itself, i have to echo what other reviewers have said, size wis it is very good. for a notebook mouse. not unuseably small as many are, but a good comfortable size.
the buttons are well placed, not too close together, so they dont get in each others way, even the 4th button which is on the side, it is above the natural position for the thumb so no real chance of accidently hitting it as is the case with many other mice. the buttons themselves have a soft click which, although it is different to the last mouse i had, is not unpleasant to use. the wheel has an almost stiff feeling, which some reviewers have seen as negative, i agree with another who sees it as a positive click, you can tell its clicking round and its not too loose so you cant accidently move it.

my computer found the device without any trouble at all, and it works very well, although im not yet sure whether or not i can get away without needing to press the link button on the bottem every time. i cant see it being a major problem if i do need to.

the only slight niggle i can find so far is infrequently the computer will drop the connection, quickly rectified by a quick press of the link button. not a big deal, although it does make a life a bit more challenging if you happen to be playing a first person shooter at the time.

despite this (i cant make any comment on battery life and other such long term things as i have only had it for 3 days) it appears to be a good buy and so far i would strongly recommend it to anyone with a bluetooth enabled notebook who is lacking in USB ports for a dongle/wired mouse.

Brilliant mouse. Doesn't feel dinky or cheap like other 'notebook' mice. In fact it doesn't feel like a notebook mouse - it feels like a normal mouse.

Easy to install; bluetooth requires no USB dongle etc.

All in all, brilliant product.

3 out of 5 stars Great Mouse - but not new!   July 7, 2008

I can't fault the mouse - it connects effortlessly, looks very nice and works a charm. It came with 2 good batteries too, so was ready to go as soon as I got it. No problems there.

However... When I order a 'new' product, I expect it to come with the original packaging. This never - it came stuffed into an envelope with the batteries. It almost feels 'back of a lorry' when this happens.

So - 5 stars for the product, 1 star for the 'new' aspect and packaging, gives it 3 stars.
