cution October 13, 2008 del (ireland) its cheap , but for a reason , cartridges are well over priced , item is "plasticy fragile" bundled software is a nightmare fills up computer with "junk software " which slows down older PC . worst printer i ever had ! i went on to get for 39 a laser printer , what an improvement samsung "dust refill" 10 does 5000 sheets , this printer with starter cartridge does 100 - 150 for 16 cartridge , samsung quote duty cycles for there machines at 5000 a month , spend a bit more , get a better product for standard printing and save piles on refills , just google the model to see how many pages you can print for a given machine then look at price of refills , HP and epson up there with most expensive refills !
Excellent value for money August 14, 2008 Briawis (Edinburgh) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I found myself in need of a basic, no-frills (cheap) printer. I did the online searches - checked prices on what was available locally - & settled on this little beauty.... I made a point of reading the previous reviews here - generally it looked ok for the money & (despite some previous reviewers' reservations)I went for it. - It cost me less than 20 quid! - (It also cost me an extra 14 quid for the USB cable) - But every advertisement I saw for this printer screamed that I would need to buy a separate cable - If previous reviewers missed this well.... Caveat Emptor - This is NOT a failing of the machine OR HP. It seems like almost ALL printers at this price need the cable as an extra - & why not? - (even the local retailers I visited surrounded the machines with extras like cables. paper, cartridges etc.) Imagine how pissed-off you'd be if they added an extra tenner to the price for including the cable & you had a spare one lying about in a drawer somewhere. - That's life - This Printer does not deserve to be marked down for not including a cable.. So... Bought it - Unwrapped it & followed EXACTLY what it said for installation.I have Vista home Premium & had no problems at all on installation. - Generally it all went perfectly. I did have some issues when using the "cartridge alignment" section during the installation routine - It seemed to back out at the section where the square needed to be aligned ?? , but if you print off the page as required & enter the values to set the alignment (a bit like an eye test, but this may be common when adding printers - I don't know as this was the first printer I've ever had to add/configure.) & follow the instructions you should be ok. This is a piece of kit designed for a specific purpose - that punches WAY above its weight. - Sure, the HP specific ink cartridges are expensive - That's why it's so cheap - they don't realise that we all know where to get much cheaper ink (Sshh.....see below) So - In Summary........... Excellent Print quality, Inexpensive, VERY easy to set up/install - Unbelievable for the price < 20,00 in Comet - other suppliers may be competitive ;-) If all you want is a basic printer (yes it also does colour photos superbly) - then go for it! 3 years ago I paid over 120 for a photosmart (portable) printer that only does 6x4 photos. This little beauty does colour A4's easily - It also does envelopes & a lot of other stuff that I haven't sussed yet. If you just want a basic printer, then go for this one - Just don't be surprised when you realise that it can do so much more for you than you ever realised. 10/10
Awkward to use and unreliable June 30, 2008 Beans (Hampshire, UK) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have had this printer for about two weeks weeks and am disappointed by it - perhaps to be expected of a printer that comes at under 20. When it does print it works well, and the pages look good quality, but it seems incapable of printing anything without at least three pop-up messages and a paper jam. The pop-up messages unnecessarily inform me when it is switched on, off (regardless of whether I'm trying to print at the time), and in between that it is "ready", inviting me to buy products online or to go to the HP online customer service section even when there is no reason to and even after I thought I had switched all of these off. The cartridges supplied are only 5ml and are already running low; the last print-out was fine, but when I try to print anything now all it does is issue a pop-up window telling me that the cartridges are low on ink; it won't even try to print any more. This morning I ended up uninstalling the entire HP software and driver package after the "low ink" message popped up literally every two seconds across everything else I was doing at the moment, even though the printer was switched off at the time and not being used. All in all I would absolutely not recommend it. The low price is about all that can be said for it, but this is invalidated rather by the relatively expensive replacement cartridges.
At this price you can't lose June 22, 2008 Dave M (Hampshire, England) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
So what do you expect for this kind of money? What you get is a simple printer that installs easily and performs exactly as you would want. OK, the speed may be a bit slower than more expensive devices and the casing may feel a bit lightweight, but it costs less than a couple of replacement cartridges! As with any printer, there is no printer lead in the box. However, this has been the case for years now and most of us already have the necessary leads lying around the house and, if not, they're not too expensive to buy. If a lead had been in the box, then I expect it would have cost more... All in all, at this price you cannot lose.
Complete waste of money June 22, 2008 C. CARDWELL (N.Ireland) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Do NOT waste your money on this printer. I bought 2 of them for printing address labels in work and both of them packed in within 6 weeks, both with the same problem (not recognising the ink cartridges). Hours of uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers on different computers brought no success. The only saving grace was that they were cheap! They'll be going back to Amazon soon for credit. Don't waste your time or your money...you get what you pay for!
