4 out of 5 stars Very good, but not quite perfect   May 15, 2008

OK, speakers of this price and size are never going to match your 500 floor standers (They just don't have the same warmth and richly detailed sound and can sound slightly muddy if you turn the bass right up)

However, given the price they are surprisingly good! Not only can they deliver plenty of volume, but (providing you leave the Tone control near the middle) then both the bass and treble are surprisingly detailed.

They also come with an iPod dock, so you can use them as both PC speakers or standalone iPod speakers.

Design wise, they are slightly bulkier than most PC speakers (but also deliver a bigger sound!) The front is a glossy "piano" black, whilst the sides are matt black, so they look good with a black PC or LCD TV.

I am very pleased with these speakers and they are great value for money, but I don't feel I can award them a "perfect" five stars, because:
- the iPod dock does seem a bit cheaply made
- there is no on/off push button, you have to use the volume dial (so lose your prev volume setting)
- the power supply/plug is a bit fat, so may take up two plug sockets on some extension leads.

But these are minor niggles and I would have probably given these speakers four and half stars if I could.

5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Pair   May 4, 2008

I was in need of a cheap, portable and good quality pair of speakers (which meant no subwoofer)to replace those excuses for speakers you get in laptops. After a lot of trawling and swatting up i decided on these and i must say im very impressed. For under 30 the range is great and the built in bass port does compensate for not having a dedicated sub. Distortion is minimal and they will easily fill an average size room, great for listening to music and watching movies too. Top job amazon and very quick delivery on super saver!

5 out of 5 stars Wow!   April 22, 2008

I was in a dilemma. Having recently bought a Sony flatscreen TV and was both impressed with the picture quality and appalled with the sound, something had to be done.. My first instinct was a cheapish micro Hi-Fi system with an aux in but the cabinet was of a limited size and I was a little dubious of too small speakers and whether it could deliver more than the TV. Next thought was along the lines of a small HiFi amp separate and some proven quality speakers. Short of lashing out three figures there seemed little in the way of solving it via this route. Then I stumbled across the reviews for these little babies... PC speakers? surely not. The consistent reviews seemed to say it all and I could tell from their descriptions that these were discerning folk. I chanced it therefore, hoping that these would suffice.
It would be no exaggeration to say that this was probably the best 30 I had spent in years!! They are, as the reviews say, FANTASTIC. The punchy, loud and hi quality sounds that come out of these things is quite frankly amazing..
One small caveat though and I really am being picky here. As one reviewer points out that they do sound best when positioned a little below the listener's ears. This is indeed true particularly with reference to the bottom end bass sound which does change significantly depending where you are sat in relation to them. This however, in my case, should prove easy to remedy by placing them in the lower section of the TV stand recess. Either that or elevating the sofa by about 1 foot in the air would make the best sound even better. I think I'll go for the former option..
If you're thinking of improving your flatscreen TV sound then buy these. You WON'T regret it! (and I'm a fussy devil!)
Wellsyboyred.

5 out of 5 stars These speakers have enriched my life!   April 16, 2008

Without boring you with the details, I lost the stereo in the divorce and my PC doesn't have a great speaker built in (think tin foil covered comb) so it wouldn't have taken much to improve my musical enjoyment.

Having a very limited income at the moment (it gets worse doesn't it?) I couldn't afford a new stereo and my room is too small (not a dry eye in the house) for a stereo anyway so I decided to venture into a thus far unexplored world of PC speakers.

For 30 I really wasn't expecting much. Especially with my luck of late (I'm doing it on purpose now). I've been blown away by these little creatives. The quality and depth of sound is staggering from such small units. I'm listening to the Beatle's 'revolver' album at the moment and it sounds incredible, I'm sure it didn't sound any better on the 150 stereo which I don't have any more. Yellow Submarine is of course still terrible but the speakers can't make up for the crime of letting Ringo near the microphone.

So back to the speakers. I'm no expert, but I am fussy and I do love my music. To me, the bass is well balanced, not too weak, nor overpowering. Its also 'crisp' (which is probably the wrong term), not all sludgy and horrid. The middle and treble is well defined and overall the sound is rich and rewarding. Power wise they're more than adequate to fill my (small) room, not losing any clarity at higher volumes. I am staggered.

I'm going to scrape together a meagre meal for 1 now, and smile while I do it knowing my little speakers will be waiting for me when I get back...

5 out of 5 stars Value for money   April 6, 2008

They're not going to compete with a good 'two satellites and subwoofer set-up' or top-end sytems, but for everyday listening (or watching films or tv programmes) on a pc (or stand-alone player) in an ordinary sized room they are very impressive, compact and extremely good value for the money. No separate amp is needed. There's no speaker balance control (left / right speaker), but this can be set-up on the pc or tv. My only very minor niggle is that they have little synthetic material labels on each side of the speaker (a bit like labels on clothing) that look really cheap and tacky, but they can be removed with a blade (used carefully!).
