1 out of 5 stars terrible   December 5, 2008

i read the reviews of this product and it got 5 stars from everyone.
"great!" i thought, and purchased it. once it arrived i set it up and began copying my files over, 5 minutes later the device developed an error and stopped copying. i thought it was a one off thing and continued to copy over my files but the same thing happened again. over and over again. i thought this was just be a isolated incident and that i had just received a faulty hard drive, so i send it back to amazon and they sent me a brand new one. again i set up this hard drive and began to copy my files, within two seconds of copying my first file, i got the same error. i tried again and again but this hard drive wouldn't even copy a single file.
to be honest im really disappointed as this was the only hard drive on amazon not to receive a bad rating.
i had never heard of Buffalo before but had faith that the hard drive would be good but i have been let down. i cant see myself ever buying another Buffalo product.

5 out of 5 stars comparing the 1TB Buffalo & MyBook   December 2, 2008

I bought 1TB a couple of weeks ago, therefor not much info on use and longevity yet. I Unpacked it, plugged in power and USB - worked immediately as described [I am not a techy]. I bought this one for huge storage at amazing price. I have had 'my book' 500gb and 250gb for a year - this was 10 cheaper than 1TB MyBook. It makes more of a whirring and clicking noise when 'thinking' but otherwise seems to operate much the same. Little light on top corner as opposed to the 'star trek' illuminated circle of the MyBook means to my eye, not quite so pleasing - but the Buffalo looks ok on the shelf. but hey, i bought for price [and obviously reliability - Buffalo has ok reviews] not aesthetics.
The advantage of difference is: on the shelf i know immediately which is the 1TB - & on the pc the different icon also immediately ID'd [pathetic i know, but i was always mixing up the two MyBooks -my daughter now has the 250gb].
Comparing the the power cables: The Buffalo USB cable and plug is thinner and smaller, & shorter [1m]- this seems cheaper. Same for the power line [4ft] cable direct to transformer on the plug itself [bulky]. The MyBook has an 'in line' transformer and longer more robust line [4ft to transformer - 6ft transformer to plug, but i can see this might not be an advantage to someone who wants 'less wiring']. Objectively Buffalo gets 5 stars - if i compare to MyBook i would knock off a star for the less robust cables.

5 out of 5 stars No nonsense, works a treat   November 29, 2008

This neat looking little drive fired up without any hassle at all, Vista spotted it and hooked it up and away I went. Couldn't be easier. It's pretty quick as far as I am concerned, more than fast enough for the back up regime I have in place. It happily fires up when the PC boots and shuts down again on power off, which is perfect.

In operation it has added no discernible noise to my set up and just sits there quietly waiting for something to do.

Does exactly what it says on the tin.

5 out of 5 stars Versatile power adapter   November 26, 2008

This item has a power adapter which can be 'adapted' to take either a 2-pin or a 3-pin option.
The adapter is supplied, together with a cover plate. You press the 'push' button and that plate can slide off.
The supplied 2-pin or 3-pin options can then be slid into place.

5 out of 5 stars 500GB Drivestation   October 21, 2008

I owned the old version of this in a 250GB but had filled it up so was pleasantly suprised to see that they had updated the look of the product, looks like my PS3 however that really wasn't that important, the thing which grabbed me was the power usage, 75% less than a standard drive they use some new fangled technology which allows the drive to go into a park mode when not searching for information which means it is not running burning my cash. Also pleased to see that they included free back up software and encryption to give an element off added value. From a technical point of view the transfer rates are excellent, I transfered the contents of my Laptops hardrive 80GB in under an hour using a standard USB cable from the box. Really please I stuck with Buffalo.
