3 out of 5 stars Buy CX300's   May 16, 2008
Mark S (Lincolnshire)
I have had the MX500's now for about 2 years for gardening etc and I did find them quite good to start with and then I came in for a shock. They were originally used on a CD walkman where they were about 3000 times better thant the OEM earphones but 4 months ago I joined the IPOD club and to my surprise they offered only a modest improvement over Apples ear buds. It is not that the MX500's are bad it just shows how affordable good electronic gear has moved on in 2-3 years. The MX500's are an old product now. I have just bought CX300's ! and they are 3000 times better than the Apple OEM bud.

3 out of 5 stars Good upgrade, but lose the case   August 4, 2007

These phones were bought as an upgrade to the cheap and nasty ones that came with my music player. The foam pads improve the sound quality and they do sound better than the others, so the upgrade was worthwhile and good value for the price. I don't use the volume control which is too primative to be much use. Only three stars because the case is a horror : the cable got stuck inside every time and eventually I had to break the case to get it out.

There seems to be a very mixed bag of reviews for these.
Having gotten them regardless, I have to say I find them a huge improvement over the standard iPod nano ones. I'm hearing things in the music which simply weren't there before. Certain tracks on my iPod I wasn't listening to any more because they didn't sound right on the original buds, now sound fab. They provide a decent full sound without having to crank the volume up as far as it will go. I'm a classical and jazz rather than a rock fan, and the bass sounds fine to me, in fact it is nice and controled without booming out of proportion. Overall I find the sound clean and sophisticated, with good detail. Admittedly they don't sound as good as my Grado full-size headphones, but I would have been more then a little shocked if they had. I don't know how they would compare to an in ear type, but then I like to be able to hear at least some ambient noise, and I don't like having to screw things into my ear canal. The cable is a bit on the short side, but as I tend to pop the player into my shirt or jacket pocket that is not a problem at all, rather the opposite. The little volume control is fine, handy enough but hardly essential. It should be noted that the little foam pads make all the difference, both in terms of sound and how comfortably they will stay in your ears.
All in all, good value and a big upgrade for your iPod.

2 out of 5 stars Sennheiser Mx 500 White Headphones   June 27, 2007

Sennheiser are renowned for professional quality headphones, that is until it comes to their in-ear phones, these are terrible! i can't state this strongly enough. The base response is dire, forget using EQ on your iPod if you want bass stick with the lousy ones that come with your iPod etc! Also they get very grubby been white.

The only mentionable thing i can say about the MX 500 is they have excellent treble and average midrange. Bottom line forget these and treat yourself to a pair of SURE E2s.. or the MOST EXCELLENT Bose 'on-ear' headphones.

3 out of 5 stars Not much better than standard iPod headphones   December 30, 2006

I was expecting more bass after reading reviews on here but to be honest they sound little different to the Apple ones, which isn't a glowing recommendation! The volume slider is also rather pointless as it will soon end up crackling when you use it, as these sliders always do. Overall then quite disappointed.
