Affordable and effective noise cancellation let down by shoddy construction September 3, 2008 S. Mckenzie (Scotland) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Like many purchasers of noise cancelling headphones in this price range I dont have 200- 300 for high-end Bose ones, so I settled for the Altec Lansings. The noise cancelling works good enough, and for me they made a few long haul flights tolerable. I was able to listen to music and in flight entertainment clearly at a reasonable volume. Audio quality is not brilliant but satisfactory. There is an element of hiss when the noise cancellation is active but the tradeoff between the hiss and noise reduction is worth it. Unlike most other noise cancelling heaphones in this price range they are full sized, fully enclose the ears and are very comfortable to wear. Noise cancellation and volume is controlled by a small unit which contains the single AAA power source. A removable audio cable connects the headphone's control unit to your chose audio device, which is a very useful feature. Two cables are provided, both a long and short one, along with an airline adaptor. I am forced to give them a low rating because of the poor construction. Somehow while sitting in my bag the nasty plastic pivot on the earpiece broke, rendering them unwearable and useless, which is a pity because they would otherwise be the best all-round perfoming headphones in this price range. If Altec Lansing ever bring out a new more rugged set then I would happily buy them again.
Great Value for a good product June 29, 2008 R. R. Knight (Suffolk) This product does what it says on the can, for a great price. Okay, Bose active noise cancelling headphones are better, but for around 10 times the price. I have had these headphones for over 6 months. I use them when cutting the lawn (I would wear ear protectors anyway) with motor mowers, and I use them on flights. They are very comfortable. I cannot wear the "in the ear type" and I don't like the "Behind-the-head" style. The complete over the ear cover assists the noise cancellation. On long-haul flights I wear them to cut out background noise - with an MP3 player, watching DVD's on a laptop and using the airline in-flight entertainment system. I also leave them on and simply unplug from whatever sound system in order to go to sleep (well, nap on a plane). The headphones provide good reproduction, have an adequate amplification range perhaps unless you use hearing aid(s). Noise cancellation is good. Taking all these things into account, plus the recommendation as a good buy by which? rates these as 5 stars. If you absolutely have to buy the very best, then you are mad and don't buy this product. For all normal people considering noise cancellation headphones and like the DJ style padded type, these are for you.
Good at noise cancelling but come apart easily February 11, 2008 Susan J. Sparks (London United Kingdom) I was delighted with the noise-cancelling performance of these on a flight to the US, but the padded section inside each earpiece started to come away by the end of the journey. I returned them and got a replacement pair but the same thing happened again on another flight. I've just stuck them back myself this time. Maybe I have just been unlucky - I certainly haven't done anything to them other than wear them!
Great sound, comfortable to wear and reasonable noise reduction August 31, 2007 R. Mijic (england) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
These headphones produce pretty good sound - the bass is especially good, and with the right equalizer settings on your mp3 player (namely increase the high frequencies 4kHz - 10kHz) they sound excellent. Unfortunately if you don't have the noise reduction switched on, the sound gets quieter and less rich. The noise reduction is reasonable - but only gets rid of low frequency noise, for example it will make the sound of traffic or of a computer fan disappear almost entirely, but the buzz of a de-tuned radio gets through. I've tested it out with a signal generator, and you get a reduction of about 15dB at 150Hz, and almost no reduction at 500Hz or above. Most noise reduction systems only respond well at low frequencies, but I expected it to be a little better than this. There is, of course, a high-frequency hissing produced by the NR, although this is not noticeable when you are playing most music - I was listening to some rock music and you really cannot hear it at all. The fact that this headset fits over your ears (rather than sitting on top of them) acts as an additional passive noise reducer, which I like. The set fits comfortably and is adjustable, as well as looking fairly robust. Also of note is the generous range accessories that come with the headset - two different lengths of 3.5mm jack leads, a two-pronged adapter, a 5mm jack adapter, and a very nice padded(!) bag for the headset. A slight downside is that these headphones are pretty big, and don't really fold up much. Overall, these are pretty good, and I'm glad I didn't spend double the money on a Sennheiser.
Good for budget price. August 21, 2007 M. Green (Annan, Scotland) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you are looking for a comfortable pair of budget headphones that will fit snugly over your ears then these are for you. However you must remember that these are a budget model and compared to other noise cancelling headphones on the market, these will not impress. The noise cancelling only works for low frequencies and the reduction is hardly noticeable, coupled with the fact that the hiss from the noise cancelling can be louder than the noise they are trying to cancel, I cant help but feel let down by my purchase. On a plus point, with noise cancelling switched on, the unit amplifies the music sent to the headphones, your own personal amp. On the down side, the audible performance of the headphones is far from spectacular. Bass is far stronger through the right headphone than the left and both left and right sides of the headphones crackle on high treble or bass notes. This performance is at normal volume listening levels, the distortion becomes worse at higher volumes. If you want a comfortable pair of headphones one step up from the pair your personal player came with, consider these. If you want performance, look elsewhere.
