Top System and yes PS3 Compatible! October 10, 2008 D. Edwards (Kent, England) OK firstly i just want to express the quality of this sound system, nice clear treble and mid and very nice rumbly booming bass, especially for 50! Now about PS3, the downside is that you will not get 5.1 surround sound, if you are after 5.1 you will need to buy a surround sound system with an optical cable in socket as the PS3 only has an optical out socket and nothing else (obviously when you connect the PS3 to the tv you will get sound from tv) but if you want to get sound out of this system here is what you need to do. Connect up your PS3 to the tv as normal (if you have a HDTV then i definately recommend you buy a HD cable which you can get in any decent electrical store for about 20) Next you connect the sound system to the TV using the green jack, you get a lead with a green, a black and an orange jack all on one which connects into the FRONT socket at the back of the sub, you then need to connect the green jack at the other end of the lead into the headphone jack of your TV. At this point i had to mute my TV for the sound to come out of the speakers but you may not have to (i have a Philips 37" HDTV) Now you should be playing your PS3 with the sound coming out of your nice loud sound system and turning your front room into a warzone when you are shooting down bad guys on GTA4!!! Hope this helps :)
Deeply funky October 7, 2008 Chris J. Millington (Suffolk, UK) have to agree with every other review here. Bought these to replace my old 5.1 set and the difference is incredible, sounds are crystal clear and crisp regardless of volume. The matrix function which emulates 5.1 surround souond from older 2 channel outputs is brilliant as well.
Console Caution September 11, 2008 Duncan McDonald (Dundee) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have had these speakers since October 07 and use them as a sound system for my PS3 and XBOX 360. First up, the speakers are excellent sound quality for the money. Crystal clear sound, good sound quality and they are powerful. I'd recommend the 540's over the 530's because it has a bigger subwoofer, wired remote, hinged central speaker and matrix mode plus independent control of the subwoofer volume. I bought the speakers to replace an old hi-fi used for console gaming. The attraction was a cheap 5.1 surround sound. Only when I got them [a couple of days after ordering via Amazon] did I find out the TRUTH. 5.1 sound is only available via a PC with a 5.1 soundcard. For consoles all you get is stereo. So beware! The matrix mode gives simulated surround sound like a reverb. Its very subtle and can be turned off but its actually fine for gaming. The supplied console dongle only allows you to connect the PC connections to a stereo connection. So no surround sound then! I felt diddled at first. However when I realised that I needed a 5.1 with HDMI to get surround sound from the PS3 then I realised I would need a more expensive sound system. I use these speakers regularly for gaming and they are very good, especially with the SW turned up full. Surprisingly, you get a seperate central channel for speech along with stereo. Delayed mono is what comes out the rear speakers. It connects fine with the XBOX but the PS3 doesn't have stereo outputs so you need to configure the output to access stereo sound. I got around this by connecting my consoles using HDMI to my LCD TV which has an audio output. The 540's are connected to this so that I can use them with the PS3, 360, Wii and the TV itself. The system is good enough quality for gaming and worth the money but note that they are difficult to connect to the PS3 and you don't get true surround sound from consoles.
Superb!! September 2, 2008 Scaramanga (Ireland) I bought these for use with my Sony Bravia Tv and they are superb. Perfect for an average sized room. BTW, they are available of a well known computer manufacturer for 46 until October......
Like having a Mini Theatre in your house July 22, 2008 Ashley R. Grist (United Kingdom) i've had my sights on these for a while now, and after being somewhat satisfied with my previous set of CyberAcoustics CA-5150 speakers for 3-4 years, i was NOT prepared for what i was about to fire up for the 1st time. I was totally blown away by the sheer power of these speakers with BASS so deep my jaw dropped!! (Cartoon like Clang as jaw hit the floor) (i didn't buy mine from here, but kick ass speakers none the less) But after trying them on my PC, and Xbox 360 i concluded i bought a set of rocking speakers for a small price!! OK these might only have stereo inputs, but you can buy a "logitech 5.1 game console adapter" on ebay for a few quid as they're not available in the UK :( pity cos they beat using the matrix mode for partial sound which isn't peticularly great as the rear speakers aren't as loud when using the matrix mode. if you can, hook them upto a 5.1 sound card and hear them come to life (I have an older VideoLogic Sonic fury in my PC) and still makes them roar!! in closing...get these speakers if you're after a rocking speaker set as i can't recommend them enough.
