Excellent value and do the job very well December 29, 2008 R. Boden (Coventry, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
There's not a lot to say - they do the job very well - the sound quality is superb (I'm using them with the iPod Touch 2G) on various different genres of music and equaliser settings. The only two downpoints: 1. The packet is impossible to open without shredding your hands! 2. The carrycase thingy is completely useless. Good value and better than some of the similarly priced brands.
Great for commuting - even better with some customisation December 21, 2008 GreedyGekko (Hampshire, England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Like other reviewers, I needed a new set of 'phones when the cord on my Shure E2C headphones cracked and split. The Sennheiser CX 55s have been an excellent replacement, and well suited to my daily commute. The "knotless" cord is very good and 95% of all tangles just drop out with a quick shake. I also feel more comfortable wrapping the headphone cable around my iPod now due to it feeling a great deal more flexible than the somewhat stiff E2Cs. The sound is very good (although the Sennheisers have a different warmth to the Shures which took a day or so to get used to), with clear top-end and meaty bass, but remaining even so that listening to Elgar, Chemical Brothers or Girls Aloud is equally pleasurable! The are two down-sides which prevent a 5-star rating. Number One: as many reviewers have noted, the packaging is atrocious. I had to go at the sealed hard plastic packaging for a good 5 minutes with a sharp knife before I managed to get everything out. The frustration is quickly forgotten, but there is just no need for all this waste these days. Secondly, I personally found the fit of the supplied earbuds to be quite poor. I tried all three sizes (does anyone really know whether their ear canal is "small", "medium" or "large"?), but still had problems getting a good fit. Fortunately I had some spare buds from my E2Cs, which I tried on the Sennheisers, and what a difference! The fit is fantastic, the isolation is significantly improved, and I also got a much better tonal range coming from the phones themselves. A highly recommended retro-fit. My experiences are probably specific to my ear shape, and I'm sure the vast majority of CX55 owners are happily using their 'phones with the supplied buds and getting the same great sound that I do from my customised set. So in summary, a great set of cans, and a worthy replacement to my chaffed and worn E2Cs.

My original plan was to buy a pair of CX95's but I got put off a bit by some of the issues with the OTT cable. So, I decided to buy little brother instead. Sennheiser provide hours of entertainment and that is before you get to the headphones. You have to prove your mettle to wear these with pride so your first task is to get them out of the bomb proof packaging. The secret here is to select the correct powertool. Then you can sit back and relax with the free origami style soft toy puzzle. After a couple of hours you'll find that you can make a triangular pouch. Very good for holding...eh! triangular things? Then with brain surgeon precision you can now liberate the headphones from the protective inner packaging. Now you are worthy to actually wear them with pride. The phones have a Y shape cable with a generous but not overly long lead and a sturdy connector. Supplied is a cable clip which is a nice extra. It does help stop the cable flap about in the wind. The anti tangle lead is very good and all it takes is a good shake to unravel. The sticky rubber can drag between clothing though. The buds are a bit bigger than the CX300 which I find are a fiddle to handle. The legs on these buds make them easy to insert and remove. You don't need to ram these into the eardrum and they are extremely comfortable, even over long periods. I hardly notice I am wearing them. When you use them for the first time, and then picked yourself off the floor, you will find the sound very smooth, surprisingly so. And loud! The sound quality is superb with a crystal clear neutral tone. In fact, they make the CX300's sound a bit harsh. The bass is tighter, more of a thud than a boom. You can hear guitar strings being plucked. They also handle loud music well. I got these for 35 locally and were only 5 more than CX300's retail. The extra investment is worth it as these sound noticably better, certainly smoother, than the CX300's (which are also excellent). If you are thinking about buying a pair of CX300's or looking to upgrade I suggest you give these some due consideration. The CX95's have a higher top end but these are good enough. I might still buy a pair of 95's if I can get them at a reasonable but then again maybe I won't need to. I commend these to you. Enjoy.
Super for your money September 27, 2008 Tan Tran 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Just received this pair of sennheiser today.... Just awesome in the ears!!! You pay 30 pounds and you have magic in your ears. Seriously. Much better than the 45 pound-shure 2EC. The bass is deep and crisp. Totally worth every single penny!
Ideal if you want to get good sound quality in nosy environments... September 25, 2008 Sven (UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
....like in planes or on public transport. Like other commentators I was a bit disappointed at first. It took me some time to get used to the strange sensation of having something stuck in my ear canal. Only when I got used to it and figured out which ear plug is the correct one for my anatomy I got really fascinated by the crisp and full sound along the entire spectrum. A good way of figuring out whether you have found the correct adapter is the following: Whilst listening to music gently push the earbuds in you ear. If the sound quality changes considerably you have the wrong adapter and they are not fitted correctly. Only 4 stars because the packaging and bag are utterly useless and intermediate sized adapters would be very useful.
