Don't Waste Your Money! March 23, 2008 David Pollard (Winchester England) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I bought my SJ 5590 as a replacement for an older HP scanner which I found very easy to use. In contrast the SJ5590 is a nightmare. The scanner has been designed around the US letter size document, not A4, as a result if you leave an A4 document on the flatbed and then use the ADF, the scanning head cannot see the documents, if scan a small document without selecting the scan area you will get an image of the slot of the scanning window of the ADF on your image. The ADF is supposed to be capable of scanning both sides of a sheet but it distorts the top of the second side and I have given up using it. It also tries to run pages back through the scanner when set to single sided scanning which leads to jamming. As a previous reviewer mentioned, the ADF is very prone to jamming, even with only one sheet in the it. However, all of the hardware problems described above are nothing compared to the software problems. When I did my initial software installation I had to spend ages downloading patches from HP to get the scanner to work, particularly to scan to pdf which is probably 95%+ of my scanning. HP have now released new software but from my perspective it is totally user unfriendly. The HP Precision Pro scanning software with my old scanner was easy to use, start the software up and if it detected a document in the ADF it opened a box for you to set the type of scan (B&W greyscale, colour) the DPI and the paper size. Hit the scan button and away it went. If it didn't detect a document in the ADF it did an immediate preview scan of the flatbed and you could then adjust the scan parameters etc before hitting the scan button. The software for the SJ5590 requires you to define presets for all the main types of scan you use. Having done this, you click the OK button (not Scan) to make a scan and the Cancel button to complete the scan. If you make a flat bed scan via a preview scan and adjust the scan area it automatically saves it as new preset scan and you then have to go and delete it. It will also save scans as new presets even if you don't change parameters unless you are very vigilant. I find all this messing about very time consuming and annoying. I use my scanner to produce pdf copies of both personal and work documents. Most of my copying is A4 but I also copy mall documents such as tickets, receipts etc for my expense records etc. The SJ5590 software makes this such a nuisance that I avoid doing it until the backlog gets out of hand and my work productivity has declined. I resent the way that HP took 250 from me for a product that doesn't work properly. I have now reluctantly decided to buy myself a new scanner, and it certainly won't be an HP scanner, my experiences with this product have put me off buying anything from HP.

Very good scanner if not a little over priced! Does what it says and does it well, one complaint the software interface could be made more simple
