5 out of 5 stars Superb scanner. No problems   April 13, 2008

Thankfully I chose to ignore the other reviewer of this product as they are clearly reviewing the software that comes with the scanner and not the hardware itself. I have installed Silverfast on my Windows XP machines without any issues. If you want to use Windows Vista then as far as I know, it works, but Vista is a possibly the worst operating system I've ever had the misfortune to use and if there are issues, they're probably Vista issues, not Plustek's. You've been warned!
Anyway, back to the scanner. I scanned a few films using the Silverfast software with great results. However, it's not exactly intuitive and it can sometimes be a struggle to get consistent results as there is far too much twiddling to be done. I read the review of this scanner's sister product, the 7200 and followed the reviewer's advice and installed Vuescan and I've never looked back. Vuescan is just as powerful as Silverfast but it just works. Install it, run it and scan into it and you get perfect results everytime. The interface is so simple and it's kind of been dumbed down but that's what makes it so good. For example, accessing the infrared clean up settings in Silverfast gives you about 200 options and settings. In Vuescan you get a choice between none, light, medium and heavy clean up.
I have scanned 20 films from the 1970's with the scanner and it's like seeing the photographs for the first time. I recommend the scanner to you all, you won't regret it.
Tip. Buy an additional film holder. The scans aren't particularly quick so while you're waiting you'll be wanting to load the next negative strip ready for the swap over.
Update. 1500 scans later and it's still going strong. Have a look at the scans for yourselves on www.watsonbowles.co.uk

Firstly I can not fault the supplier as it came immediately and was as described.

The problems start as soon as you try to register the product with the manufacturer. Additional CD's are supplied that do not have serial numbers and require countless visits to the web site to register and obtain new serial numbers. Failure to do this only allows you to use the item in demo - reduced mode.

After two hours of emails, countless reboots it eventually accepted it was registered. ( windows Vista 32 ) It then went into a series of starting several copies of the same programme, refusing to scan and some of the most confusing software I have seen in 20+ years of dealing with computers. It then decided it wasnt registered, started a third copy and then crashed.

User friendly it aint. Small compact , quiet and lightweight is all I can say. Very disapointed. Now just remains to be seen if I can get money back.
