3 out of 5 stars Trouble with scaning negatives   July 11, 2008

An excellent flatbed scanner however there does seem to be a common fault that has also caused problems to another reviewer.
On scaning negatives there is a vertical blue line about 1/4" from the edge af the scanned image. On contacting Canon I was told it was probably a faulty LED and should send it back for replacement. As I do not use it for negative scanning much and this was just a bonus I can't be bothered.

5 out of 5 stars Super little machine!   June 25, 2008

I was forced to buy a new scanner due to Epson not providing a driver for my old one now that I've got a new PC. It was hardly used and in perfect working order - a shameful waste. However, every cloud has a silver lining! What a little cracker the Canoscan 4400F is. Very easy to set up and simple to use. No 1" thick manual to wade through (as with my Epson model and I never did understand how to use it properly!) only an 8 page easy start guide. Just remember to take the mains cable out of the box before you take it up to the loft for storage and then plug it in! I didn't and couldn't understand why my PC didn't recognise the scanner - whoops. I had been installing rather a lot of devices on the new PC all at once so it was easily forgotten. The box with the power cable in is tucked underneath nestled in the polystyrene. Nothing more to say really as I've only just had a quick play, but it easily coped with an old negative I tried and my first treasured photo came out very well too. I can't wait to start organising all my old prints and negatives. I can recommend this scanner.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful machine!   June 16, 2008

This is my third scanner and it's the first one that's done what I wanted without having to spend an hour trying to figure out how to works. In addition, the quality is at as good as the 'all singing and dancing' one that I have at work.

4 out of 5 stars Exactly what I expected   June 5, 2008

I am a Graphic design student who wanted an A4 scanner that would scan photos, books and other images as well as negative film strips and slides. I also didn't want to break the bank, but needed something decent.

I received my scanner this morning (one day early) and found it very easy to install on my Apple iBook G4.

I have already scanned in several photos and negative film strips. The photos came out great and at a quality that I can repair older ones. The only negative is that the film strip holder is seriously flimsy, you have to be really careful when handling it, I can see that it might not last.

The rest of the build quality is good, the extending lid allows you to scan big design books, which I needed and the buttons on the front allow a very fast and easy way to scan what you want.

For the money this scanner is exactly what I needed, 60 is an investment for a skint student and I hope it lasts the time. For the amount I'll use it it's easily worth more.

I would definitely recommend this scanner to a friend or anyone who's wanting a scanner to alter old photos or to just copy images/documents. I wouldn't recommend it to a professional as the image quality isn't outstanding, but perfect for what I need it for.

I purchased this scanner specifically to transfer my many hundreds of 1970-80's 35mm slides and negatives onto my computer to store them onto CD's. I have to say that the scanner meets my needs very well even though the process of scanning slides takes about 12 -15 minutes for 4 slides. The finished product is great. The scanner is a bit noisy compared to my previous Canon flat bed scanner but I can live with this. The delivery of the scanner was first class and turned up exactly as promised.
