3 out of 5 stars Patience required for "easy install".   September 11, 2008

I was very pleased with this printer when I bought it 3 months ago, all the functions are easy to use and the ink cartridges seemed to go on for ages, printing photos and all sorts. It was quite a struggle to get it set up, the wi-fi at least, the rest was easy. Took about 3 hours, just remember to turn off your Airport before configuration.

Well, that was how it started off anyway. When it came time to change the ink cartridges is when the real problem began. Firstly, the new yellow cartridge could not be recognized, swapping back to the old one worked. Swapping back to the new one again yielded the same problem. So I thought, ok I will use the old one to keep the printer online (you need all 4 to use the printer at all). Put the old one back again and got the same error as with the new one! The cartridge could not be recognized. After phoning Epson support they said to rub the exposed circuit on the cartridge with newspaper (ok! why not?) and if that did not work then return the printer for exchange.

Later that day, I had a new printer. Plus point here is that the retailer (Elkjøp in Norway, a division of Dixons, UK) and Epson had no problem with providing a new item. That part was made easy and painless, so thanks to them for that.

This did not solve the problem. When trying to configure the new EpsonNet WiFi ethernet router it would not show up in the configurator. Remember I had been through all this a few months before, and I am pretty good at these things, networks etc. I tried everything! Epson did their best to help, but after 3 versions of the configuration software, endless hours of my time and knowing all the cables / connections were good, I ended up getting my old router back from shop (who luckily still had it) and the new one now lives in box, alone and unused. I still don't know what the problem was, my old router would not show up in Epson Config either, so it wasn't a faulty router, it wasn't the Software or drivers as I tried combinations of 3 different releases of each, including the latest versions from Epson Europe (download) and the ones I was pointed to for download by the support team.

I should mention here that I am using an Intel Mac with OS 10.5.4 and 3Gb ram.

As much as Epson tried to help, unless there is a complete overhaul of their configuration software this is the last ever WiFI product I will buy from them. I just don't have whole days to waste like this.

An important point here is that had I not managed to get my old router back I would have had to return this 2nd printer also, and not for a replacement but for a product by a rival manufacturer. It simply did not work at all.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Printer - needs better instructions for WiFi   July 20, 2008

I've only just recently purchased this printer to replace the Epson R300, all I can say is that this printer is an excellent printer for the quality. Printer cartridges are very cheap (genuine ones), and Epson have been great with adding WiFi into this printer, but its a shame they didn't explain that the WiFi isn't built into the printer but its an extra box. As the other guy stated it is a nightmare to setup due to the instructions, but when its setup it works perfectly. It did conflict with my Linksys router, but when that was reset the network connected and I can now use the printer AND scanner over the network which is just brilliant.

I'v given this 4 / 5 as the printer is excellent just a shame about the instructions, if they were better it would of gotten 5 / 5.

4 out of 5 stars BUY IT   May 31, 2008

I have had this unit for some 2 months now and I am very impressed. Why I bought it was primarily for the WiFi compatible printer to replace my very trusty Epson Stylus 600 that has proved its self after some 12 years to be very reliable and faultless. Appreciating that I have not bought a printer for some time I am amazed what you get for the money printing from memory cards or PictBridge, without a PC if you like using the units little screen, copy and fax. The WiFi connection was a bit of a nightmare unless you are some type IT expert, as I am not. I have currently my home PC connected to it along with two laptops and all working great with the laptops able to print, scan etc all wireless without the need to turn on the PC and all in quick time with only a short delay from hitting the button. What is worth noting is that WiFi version of the DX9400F is basically a boxed DX9400F but in second bigger box with a Printer Box along with the extra bits you require apart from a Router and any straight forward instructions. Don't let this but you off, now it is up and running I am very clad that I bought it and to date would recommend it, you will require a Router (as far as I aware) connected to the Printer Box to the DX9400F. My set-up is the DX9400F to the Printer Box to my Speedtouch Modem (that I already had) and beyond that an Ethernet Cable to my PC and the laptops are wireless. You will need to install the supplied software on all the computers, hardwired you wireless that you wish to interface with the DX9400F. Lastly it is a bit noisy but not the worst by a long way and the build quality is probably not as good as my old Epson as the DX9400F is almost twice the size and half the weight but this may just be progress, it all feels solid enough. Go on buy it, if better information had been supplied I may have given it 5 Stars.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy.   March 22, 2008

Average printer if you like the noise, wifi crap to many pre conditions not advertised when selling. Like internet provider must allow file sharing, if they don't it won't work. Now using it as a normal 4 in 1 printer, scanner etc, gave up on the wifi, there must be better systems than this.
