5 out of 5 stars Love it!   September 5, 2008
Dave (Bristol, UK)
I am very impressed with the Sony NR10E laptop. After a bit of research I quickly came to the conclusion that I had to get a VAIO pc as I may be using the machine for music. There was also the question of build quality and reliability which Sony are well known for. I ordered this, my first laptop, from Amazon/Logical Solutions.

First impressions out of the box were the really nice silver finish and its lightness, even including the battery pack. The keyboard has a comfortable but positive feel and responds quickly and the screen is above average laptop quality, with a nice clear finish and is easy on the eyes for text. Sound playback quality is important for me and I was not disappointed, having clear, undistorted stereo with a good top end, and plugging it into my hi-fi I could appreciate its decent sound chip. I hate track-pads so I quickly added a Logitech optical mouse, giving me a nice little mobile office (I need to get a cable lock). Battery life is nothing to get excited about, but I can usually get over 2 hours out of it. I did not notice any excessive heat build-up - though it is best kept away from carpets and soft furnishings to aid cooling. A major plus-point is the serious lack of fan noise; this laptop is certainly very quiet!

Of course, as is the case with most laptops it was all the ridiculous pre-installed `free' software that gave me the biggest headache, but after a couple of hours with my trusty hatchet I was able to strip it down to a nice lean Vista system, which enabled it to boot and run faster. Another problem I have yet to overcome is creating a dual-boot XP install as this requires SATA hard-disc drivers, but it is do-able.
Being bottom of the range the processor speed is a little on the slow side, being a dual-core 1.46GHz, but with unnecessary software removed this does not become apparent in daily use. The generous 2GB memory and 160GB hard disc should prove adequate for most users.
I do have to say that I am not a fan of Vista, much preferring XP but I do appreciate the enhanced security features of Vista what with all the web-based exploits out there. I don't use Internet Explorer, so a quick install of Firefox 3 + NoScript along with Avast free antivirus and Spybot S&D took care of web browsing. Remove the installed Norton first; it's not worth the money in my opinion.
To sum up, I'm in love with my new laptop - it's easy to use, fast, light and looks great. I already feel inspired to do more work and to get out and about with it. Recommended.

2 out of 5 stars Dissapointed   August 11, 2008

I had always held the belief that Sony made a good laptop, unfortunately I have been sorely disapointed with this purchase. I realise I purchased the budget Vaio model but this really is a flimsy piece of equipment. The DVD drive especially is a source of problems. It seems to be a real lottery to get a disc to read and 50% of the time when you hit pause on a DVD you won't be able to restart (seen this behaviour with multiple media players, so can't be software related). The touch pad is also not as responsive as my last laptop. Have also had problems with the battery pack overheating. Vista certainly doesn't help the experience either, after using the laptop for more than a couple of hours it is highly probable that it will seize up, requiring a forced shutdown. None of the problems are consistent enough for me to bother going back to the manufacturer, but often enough to make me wish I had purchased another laptop.

4 out of 5 stars I love my new laptop!   January 27, 2008

I got this laptop a few weeks ago and I have been so impressed with it. It is very slim and elegant and not too heavy, perfect for girls!
The keypad is nice and big and if you run your finger down the right hand side it scrolls down pages which is handy. However I find that it keeps skipping back to previous web pages when I do something with my finger on the keypad, I havent figured out what Im doing wrong yet and its very annoying. I was a bit wary of Windows Vista to begin with but its very useable. The laptop is practically silent, even when its been running for hours, which still amazes me since my last laptop sounded like a steam train.
The spec suits me just fine as I only really use my laptop for uni work, playing dvds and browing the web. Im not a gamer, so I dont know whether the laptop is suitable for that.
The only downsides are that (as is the case with all new laptops) you have to buy Office and Norton after the trial period is over and you have to make your own recovery discs as the laptop doesnt come with any. But dont worry the laptop guides you through the process.
Considering this is a Vaio its an amazing price and a really great laptop, it looks good, its fast and silent and I would thoroughly recommend buying it.

this laptop was excellent value for money.
its got a good look and ive not had any major problems with it, though i have found that the touchpad sometimes seems to be less sensitive than at other times.
the only thing this model lacks is extra keys for music/dvd controls.
overall im impressed and it does everything i need it to do.

Ok where to start, the price seems a good a place as any!! For the price I was staggered to find a vaio with the specs especially the ram and hard disk and I suppose dual core processor as high for the sub 500 now of course you could get a advent or the like same spec and price but lets be honest I think every one would prefer the name of Sony and superior build quality that goes with it!!! Now I have to agree the lack of disks for software etc is not the best but I suppose that's why its cheaper and to be fair I would rather more hardware than software, Now on to the laptop its self it gets (for people familiar with vista system rating out of 5) 3.1 rating and this is due to its graphic capabilities most scores for the processor ram hard disk are in the region of 4+!!!! It runs vista aero fine and there are no issues once you stop the Sony bloat ware from loading up using the msconifg tool. To sum up this laptop it is an ideal bit of kit at a good price it is not for gamers but for people who use there laptop for internet, music, office and general multimedia it is deal due to the future proof size of hard disk and ram the processor could be better but it is not too bad and handles vista with ease. So if you're not looking to play crisis on your laptop and you want to stand out in a crowd this bit of kit s for you!!!!! enjoy
