 Just what I was after - Excellent purchase July 2, 2008

Bought this camera as a replacement/addition to an older Olympus Mju400. The Olympus was fine but the flash tended to wash out subjects when used in low light conditions. Having researched the options I ultimately decided upon the f40d based on its flexibility and claimed excellent performance at higher ISO settings.
Thus far I have been extremely impressed with this camera, I have mainly used it in Auto setting or the N setting (where flash is not made available so the ISO setting is changed to overcome lower light settings) and in both cases the results have been superb (even at ISO800). The N+ setting (where the same picture is taken with and without flash) is something of a gimic but does show up that in many cases the flash is not the best option (particularly when subject or background is reflective).
Have yet to try out the various options in terms of picture mode but have a wedding later in the year so will get to try the party mode.
Note a number of negative comments about image quality but bear in mind this is a 100 compact not a 300+ DSLR. That said the flexibility and image quality is excellent for the money.

I really can't believe how good this camera is - I would have expected to pay 200- 300 for this kind of quality. It is far, far better than the Nikon and Olympus digital cameras I have had previously (although to be fair the Olympus I have is the first model of their waterproof and shockproof range so I suppose some compromise on picture quality is to be expected in exchange for being able to use it in water and drop it without breaking it!).
The casing looks great and the pictures are fantastic, the low-light "natural" setting being especially impressive (and where I have previously felt most let down by digital cameras). Easy to use and under 100 - buy one now!

Great little camera this, especially for the price.
Takes generally decent clear sharp photos, most impressive for me was the surprisingly good video it gives - not limited to 30 seconds like many cameras (it goes as long as you want in fact: 30 minutes on a 2GB card) and in quite amazing quality for such a little thing...
All fairly idiot-proof too which is handy.

My kodak easyshare died on me a week before my best friends wedding, I purchased my old digital camera through Amazon so I came straight to Amazon, I was initially searching for a kodak as I am quite basic with technical equipment and wanted a good quality camera with good photo's and easy to use. I searched for ages and then found this on top 10 sellers, I read all the customer reviews and thought wow seems brilliant, but I kept thinking about the kodak easyshare and how I knew how to use it, would I have time to learn a new camera in time for my friends big day.... well I decided to take a chance, I ordered it and 24 hours later it was in my sitting room. I charged it and then spent half and hour scanning the instruction book and had a play.
For someone who is not very quick with picking new things up easy well I was taking pictures of the cat and even took a video same day as getting it, I love it, I would recommend this camera to anyone. It is very easy to use, the photo quality is exeptional, the anti shake option is great especially when taking pictures of people moving or dancing etc and the flash on/off option is great as it takes 2 photos of the same image and then shows you a preview and that is a really clever idea. You can't zoom on the video which I am used to but I didnt feel I missed out on my video footage and on my old camera when I did zoom on video you could hear the zoom operating which was always annoying.
Buy one you won't be dissapointed

i got the finepix f40 fd for my birthday and was amazed at the quality of the photos. as soon as i opened the box i thought the camera must have cost around 200- 300 because i previously owned the kodak c875 which despite it having many great features such as a 5xoptical zoom and 8.1mp quality pics, turned out to be discraceful and my holiday pictures in 2007 were horrible and dark. however the finepix f40 fd will give me superb holiday pics for my holiday this august 2008 and i am already snapping away! whatever you decide, BUY THIS CAMERA, YOU WONT BE DISSAPOINTED. THE ONLY PROBLEM WITH THE CAMERA IS SOME PEOPLE EXPECT FAR TOO MUCH DESPITE IT HAVING EVERYTHING YOU COULD ASK FOR!!!!!! HOPE THIS HELPED U . JJ...
