Great! September 29, 2007 T. K. Salinger (London, UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I completely disagree with 'higsboyos' review. Of course, these speakers are only USB speakers so you cannot expect top quality sound. Firstly, I did not have any trouble standing up the speakers, although the big black USB wire does look a bit unsightly if not covered up. Secondly, they did not vibrate when turned to full volume. Admittedly, full volume isn't very loud but it still is very loud for a pair of USB portable speakers that are quite small. Thirdly, I think the sound is great. Fourthly, if you haven't bought these speakers yet and are wondering, they are smaller than they look in the picture. They are approximately 13cm high and 6cm across. Overall, I think that these speakers are great.
Portable Laptop Speakers February 11, 2007 Strange England (Walsall, UK) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
First off, these are not desktop speakers and do not compare with such. They are primarily designed with portabillity in mind and to this end they work very well. The sound overall is relatively poor, very woolly and over emphasised in the lower midrange, this works OK for speech but is very dissapointing for music, however with a little tweaking of the graphic in Win Media Player and the worst of this can be offset (though you'll never lose all the boxiness or acquire a HiFi sound). If you keep them EQ'd relatively flat they will go quite loud and have the abillity to fill the room with more sound than you should reasonably expect for units of such a small size. In conclusion I think these units perform far above what I would have expected for such a small, compact & portable speaker system, I've had no problem standing the individual units on my table and can only get them to vibrate badly if I boost the bass response (and create an unbalanced sound). I think for what these speakers were designed for they are excellent, they certainly surpass my laptops' inbuilt speakers by miles. When taking my laptop around with me if I wanted to listen to just music at the highest quality I would get a quality USB audio interface and a good pair of headphones, otherwise I will use these units, at home I would use a decent set of 2.1 desktop units.
Good value for money??? December 9, 2006 higgsboyo (Bicester, UK.) 4 out of 8 found this review helpful
I dont think so. I bought these speakers on the strength of the previous review, but I think, after the speakers were delivered and connected to my laptop, that the reviewer must of been having a laugh. So what are the speakers like I hear you asking? Well, after struggling to get them to stand upright, giving up and laying them flat, I plugged them in to a spare USB port and waited for them to install. Good so far as they installed immediately so I fired up media player and selected an album and pressed play. Now, I wasnt expecting the sound to be much cop initially as everything needs to be set up, but after endless fiddling with graphic equaliser settings I could not get the music to come to life. In fact music sounds better through my standard laptop speakers. Ok, so the problems are: 1 - speakers are so light they vibrate on the desk when played only sligtly loud 2 - no treble unless you raise the speakers to earhole level 3 - speakers wont stand up straight so have to be laid flat 4 - if you connect the speakers end to end as shown in the product picture they sound their worst. I have now packed them up and returned them and will have to be happy continuing to connect my laptop to my amp. Not much use when working away from home though, trying to pass time in a hotel room listening to music and watching DVDs. Ah well, it was worth a go.
Fantastic Sound March 26, 2006 31 out of 32 found this review helpful
Truly fantastic sound. Very neat design. The speakers fit together at the base and the USB cable wraps around to provide both cushioning for transportation and neat storage of the cable. However, beware if you want to use them with a desktop. The USB cable is only 50cm long and the wires between the speakers the same length and they cannot be detached. Realistically they can only be used with a laptop set-up unless your desktop is literally on your desktop and you would be happy to have your speakers close together. Philips may have missed a trick here, as longer cables (or the ability to extend them) would have made them more versatile. Having said that, I've given them a 5 as I wanted them for my laptop - the sound and portability is what I have rated.
