Utter Rubbish - Dont buy! June 27, 2008 M. Hutchinson Bought these for 19.99 @ PCW - WHAT A WASTE OF TIME! GOT SOME LEVEL OF SOUND WHEN PLUGGED INTO MY HIFI TO CHECK THAT THEY WORKED. BUT WHEN CONNECTED TO PC AS EXPECTED, THEY ARE PATHETIC.
very good with the right source April 8, 2008 W. Whitmore (UK) My whole reason for buying them was the fact they didn't require batteries and they were so cheap (i think i paid 7 for them in a shop) so i didn't have much to lose. With my Creative Zen Touch, they are loud enough to drown out a conversation in an average sized living room. They are very musical, having a range similar to that of normal speakers. These are not powered speakers, as another reviewer has mentioned, they are passive and take all their power from the source. You cannot expect house-party type volumes from them. I have tried these with my laptop and yes they are terrible, but that is probably down to the output on the sound card. I have tried them with an iRiver and Ipod and the output has been good also. I agree the wording on the side of the box is misleading (for which i have docked a star), but as my title says, with the right source, they really are very good considering they don't require any additional power.
Quiet please! March 14, 2008 DD (UK) I agree with all the other reviewers. These are totally unfit for the purpose that they are designed for. So quiet that even breathing loudly will drown them out!
Better than I expected. August 25, 2007 Schtum (Edinburgh, Scotland and sometimes in the Western USA,) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I just bought a pair of these in Walmart here in the USA for $9.00. For about 5 quid I wasn't expecting much from a passive (non amplfied) speaker but I've been pleasantly surprised. They enhance the sound output from my Philips Freevents X66 laptop nicely and produce a reasonable volume. Perhaps the impedance is optimised for Philips equipment.
Ok, if you're a bat... July 19, 2007 Spike 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
These speakers from Philips are ideally quite good - they're small enough to stow away in a bag, there's no need for extra cables and they look pretty cool too. The only problem is with the volume. There's no individual volume button on them, though I spent ages lookng because they are so quiet. Even at full volume on my iPod (which would be deafening on any other speakers), it gave the same amount of sound as headphones would. Another problem seems to be that the central domes on the speakers dent easily, which could damage them later. Great idea, just needs tweaking!
