3 out of 5 stars Will this work with iTunes   May 4, 2008

I'm told this won't work with DRM protected tunes, like those bought from iTunes. It this is so, should it not be made clear?

4 out of 5 stars Very good product but..........................   May 3, 2008
Mr. A. Holt (west midlands UK.)
As some of the other reviewer`s have mentioned not the easiest product to setup, unlike it`s most obvious rival Sonos this being a breeze to setup, then again it`s 3 times the price.

Once setup, does take along time to scan music files on PC and any NAS,more on NAS`s in a moment, once done though music easy to find. sound quality seem`s to very good, the only problem is the analouge output`s can`t be switched to fixed level like the digital outputs.
the control is easy to use and i like the ability to access podcasts directly.

One word of caution though, if you want to use this product with a NAS, and independantly of your PC, it will only work with certain NAS`s, check the logitech website for details. I have, or had a Netgear 500gb storage central sc101, i`ve had to change this for another netgear product the ReadyNAS DUO as this will run slimserver software, which is required for those times when your PC is not active, or in my case i don`t have a desk top PC only a laptop.

To sum up very good product, require`s patience to setup and get best out of.

4 out of 5 stars Might take a while to set up.......................   April 13, 2008

The logitch duet is a duo of a a controller and base station that can stream music in many formats from computers, network attatched storage, online lockers (at a cost of $40 pa) and internet radio to play through an existing hifi system or active speaker system. Several base stations can be place around the home and music controlled, through each one, by a single handset, multiple handsets or a computer. As such this is a cheaper, more "open" version of the Sonos system which looks very expensive in comparison. Many different sound formats will play including FLAC, MP3, Apple lossless etc. Try getting Windows Media Player in Vista to play FLAC!
The presentation of the box is superb and can only be compared to the packaging of early ipods with a well designed box with components in fancy wrapping.
Setting up the box initially is relatively easy. As is pairing it with a computer to play music in a stored folder. The lack of a decent manual is unforgiveable and the web interface of the online squeezecentre is poor. I spent an entire day tring to set up slimserver on my qnap server and only managed it after my second update of the handsets firmware. The handset does seem to have trouble communicating with the wifi access point despite the fact that there is a good signal (and I canot see an easy way to switch the base sation to wired without resetting it and starting again). The sound quality with well encoded MP3's is outstanding using external decoding (via optical), a comparison with the same MP3 played through may amp from my ipod's earphone socket is convincing. I have not tried the analogue out of the base station.
The best bit about the logitech product, that it is an enthusiasts product with lots of linux based modifications possible, is also it's downfall, getting it to work how I wanted it involved, searching forums, visiting websites and downloading software, some of it in beta form.
This is certainly not a product in it's current form for the plug and play novice. To make it work you need an understanding of WiFi networks and get your head round logitechs weird way of naming the controller and base station. Adavanced use is very tricky, however I'll be buying more base sations hopefully with active ceiling speakers in the future., once the controller is purchased a budget of 200 per room ( 100 for the base station) including speakers makes this a very affordable multiroom solution in comparison to the Sonos system.

4 out of 5 stars Great product but requires a bit of effort   April 8, 2008

I got this product a few weeks back. It's not a plug in a play type of product, it can take a little bit of effort to get it to work and I wouldn't recommend it for someone with little or no technical knowledge. Having said that I think the sound quality is excellent unlike the previous poster. If you rip your CD's to a lossless format you will get the best sound quality. The Slimdevices community is bringing out updates and plug-ins all the time and if you keep on top of this you will get the most out of the product. A particularly good plugin is ALienBBC that allows you to play all BBC radio streams including listen again and Podcasts. Again if you put the effort in this is a brilliant and flexible product at an affordable price. I'll definitely be buying more recievers.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible Interface and less than hi if quality sound   April 4, 2008

I made the misktake of buying a duet, after reading rave reviews of it and of the squeezebox 3. I wish I hadn't. I bought it to play 24 bit files, which can be downloaded from some music sites. OK it plays them well but only at 44.1 and 48 Khz, not higher quality versions. It has taken me far too long to sort out the audio settings on my Imac to make high quality files work (at lower khz rates) , but not through iTunes. Only when you get that right does the squeezebox work - and i only found out about the need to do so from Stereophile - an american hi fi magazine.

The software is far from intuitive and the handset feels cheap and that it won't last long. Artwork shows up in some files but not others, and the listings are over complicated.

All in all I feel I have wasted my money and that I would have been better off spending a few more pounds on a laptop and simply downloaded my music to that and plugged in it to my hi fi. (I've tried with my partner's laptop - it sounds better than the squeezebox)

Having said all that - I've had no problems with its wifi reception or range.
