2 out of 5 stars Failed to work on one of my PC's   July 11, 2008

I bought this router from Amazon (supplied by PIxmania).
All the packaging was in French (which seems to be typical of items from Pixmania), so not a good start.
The power supply was a two pin affair with a UK adaptor - something I was not keen on.
I bought this router to replace my Netgear WGR 614, I wanted a gigabit router as my most recent PC had a gigabit network, and I'm due to replace some of my other PC's at home shortly.

Router seemed to work OK, but I had real problem getting one of the PC's to be recognised by it. WAs OK with my old Netgear one.

In the end, I got fed up with it (after about a week of trying) so I sent it back.

Pixmania refunded the cost of the router, but did not refund the postage to/from them, so it cost me about 12.

Pixmania tested the router and said it was working OK, so the problem may have been my lack of technical knowledge.

Only giving it two stars because of the French power adaptor / packaging and the fact that it's not as easy to set up as it should be.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent router   June 6, 2008

No problems so far. Easy to set up. Using with Vista and XP, all fine. Also handles streaming of video files with ease.

I'm using it with a Linksys DMA 2100 to stream music, TV and photos to the living room TV from Vista Media Center. Works a charm. My previous wireless n router which was a Belkin couldn't handle 'multicasting' which was required for the streaming.

That said, the lights on this router flash ALL THE TIME!!! It's a little bit annoying but no different from most other routers. Only Belkin so far seem to have sorted this. Their newest routers have 'always on' (or off) lights, and that is much nicer to have in the home (or anywhere for that matter). But I wouldn't buy Belkin again until they add multicasting support.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to install, works excellently   June 3, 2008

I bought this so that we could connect wirelessly a laptop (XP) and desktop (Vista) to the internet at the same time. I was a bit apprehensive that it could turn into a slog to get this installed, but I didn't need to worry. I am really impressed with how easy this was to set up. The installation wizard was straight forward, guiding me step by step through the modem installation and setting up the security. Amazingly, I was able to connect wirelessly to our Virgin cable broadband from my laptop within 3minutes of putting the installation CD in the drive! I would thorougly recommend for complete beginners like me... although make sure this is suitable for your broadband connection first.

5 out of 5 stars excellent box   April 8, 2008

I've had my dir-655 for a fair few months now, been very happy with it, no crashes, no reboots, no slowdowns, no problems - period. Not had an issue getting any laptops working on the wireless, used various machines including mac's on 802.11n and ibm, dell and sony laptops on 802.11g. I have NAS and a PS3 hard-wired onto it, both of which work fine, I get excellent throughput on wireless and regularly watch 1080p video over wireless from the NAS just fine. Just remember to save the settings before you do a firmware upgrade - it caught me out the first time... :)

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended   April 1, 2008

The previous excellent reviews have it spot on, so I'll try to provide a less technical summary. This is a quality wireless N-spec (draft) gigabit router. So, if you need to share "fast" broadband, want better wireless coverage and enjoy a gigabit network this is the product for you. In fact, I would recommend this product even if you have one of the standard 8Mb offerings.

Remember though that this product does not have a built in ADSL modem and so that means an extra purchase, if you don't have one knocking around, and an extra mains plug to accommodate. I have the DIR-655 paired with a D-Link DSL-320T. Set up was very, very easy by just following FAQs from D-Link's web site. In short, it worked with hardly any intervention from me, although I can appreciate that many people will be uncomfortable at the thought of connecting and checking the configuration of two pieces of hardware.

The only problem I encountered was when updating the firmware to the latest version. This isn't a necessary step, but something I like to do with my hardware; the normal rule is only do this when something doesn't work or you need a new feature. The router comes with v1.02 of the firmware, but v1.03 is available from D-Link's UK/European web site (actually an FTP location). I couldn't get v1.03 working the one time I tried it but I suspect something went wrong with the process rather than the firmware itself. So, I am currently using v1.11 which is available from the US web site, but does invalidate the warranty according to D-Link's disclaimers. If you do decide to upgrade the firmware, download v1.02 first from D-Link's FTP site just in case anything goes wrong.

Talking of warranties - it comes with an 11 year warranty, which I find astonishing when 2 years seems to be the standard from other companies. Remember, hardware does fail, as I found out with my previous modem/router, and sometimes this happens outside the warranty period.

For wireless connectivity to my laptop I use the Netgear WN511B notebook adaptor. Coverage everywhere in the house and garden is very good to excellent reporting 270Mbps. Of course, that figure is no more accurate than the 54Mbps you get with 11g spec equipment, but I can state that data definitely now flows considerably more quickly - I just haven't performed any objective measurements.

The casing on the DIR-655 is white and black and to my mind looks fairly stylish. It comes with a little stand, which I guess helps with air flow, for vertical positioning and seems to run reasonably cool. There are also supplied two screws for optional wall mounting.
