The HQ8170 could do much better! February 4, 2007 Fabien (Banbury) 12 out of 15 found this review helpful
I have bought an earlier model 6 years ago and was delighted with it. However, when I saw the HQ8170 advertised on Amazon, I decided to take the plunge and buy it, thinking that technology had moved on and it would give me an even better shave. I was quite attracted by the new 3 rotary blades system, since mine only had one and the manufacturer's claims that it gave a closer shave, 50% more etc... When I tried it on, I was ever so disappointed. The shaving experience isn't any better! In fact, it takes just as long as my old one for exactly the same result. In view of this, I have doubts about the 3 blades system and tempted to say that is a gimmick. I still recommend Philishave as it is still a very good make nonetheless but you are well advised to buy a cheaper model that will do just the same job! I praise Amazon for the 5 Star service and for giving me a full refund on this purchase, it was much appreciated!.
The HQ8170 is a winner April 30, 2006 MJT66 (South Coast) 71 out of 72 found this review helpful
I have been a wet shaver for some 25 years. I have tried battery-operated electric shavers but they have never quite reached the grade. I have dark hair and strong bristles meaning that by lunchtime I look as if I haven't really shaved at all that day! The drawback with wet shaving, as most will know, is cutting yourself and it always happens on those important days when you have a job interview, or a wedding to go to, and you need to put that crisp, clean white shirt on without getting blood all over the collar!! I purchased my HQ8170 only about three weeks ago and was sceptical to say the least and a little hesitant about shelling out over 100; it seemed a bit of a gamble. What a superb purchase it has turned out to be. I thought at first that the blades didn't seem to be rotating fast enough and it was very very quiet. But, the shave really is as close as my wet shave and my beard does not start reappearing till well late in the day. The design is a very modern, ergonomic one and the key to its success is the fact that it has 3 sets of blades in each of the three rotating heads; it really makes a difference. Another issue I have had with electric shavers is they miss the odd hair on the neck and that can end up in-growing; this has not happened with the HQ8170. It has all manner of flashing lights on the front to tell you of remaining battery life, when it needs cleaning and when the blades need replacing. As far as cleaning goes, I have been traditional so far in using the brush that comes with it to individually clean the parts. It comes with this elaborate "jet-clean system" and a bottle of blue stuff which is supposed to last a month or so. What you do is pour some of this stuff into the tray and place the shaver upside-down into it. Quite frankly, it's a bit of a muchness and gives Philips the opportunity to charge a bit more for a very good shaver. In summary, a very very good substitute for wet shaving and even though I think it is a little over-priced, it makes it easier to bear when I think about how much I was spending on expensive Excel blades and shaving foam. Plus I know I am not going to mess up my shirt collars anymore!!

I would definately urge anyone to buy this shaver. You really can tell the third set of shaver rings has been added, as the shaving time is much less and smooth. Cleaning is easy, FIVE STARS for Philishave HQ8170cc.
