5 out of 5 stars Ice magic!   March 6, 2008

This machine really is the perfect compromise between the small budget 'pre-freeze' machines and the big 'make it when you want it' countertop machines.

The quality can be excellent, with soft smooth texture and almost imperceptible ice crystals (and no crystals at all with the more cream-heavy recipes).

I use the Ben and Jerry's vanilla 'sweet cream' recipe as the base upon which to experiment with everything from chocolate orange to blackcurrant puree. The results are always first rate - genuinely, this is as good as shop bought ice cream.

Read the reviews here, and then buy it!

Got this for christmas, mainly to make ice cream for my son who's allergic to cows milk, so we could make decent frozen desserts for him. Also so we know what's in the ice cream.

The instructions suggested mastering basic vanilla ice cream first. I'm not usually a fan of vanilla, but mmmmmmmmmm, this is delicious. We've used goats milk products for some yummy ice cream - lovely, and out of this world frozen yoghurt. Oh, fab fruit sorbets too.

I thought it would need the freezer to be on the fast freeze setting - but it set extremely hard, so now we just leave it on the normal setting and it's fine, lovely and creamy, don't leave it too long before scraping it out, or it gets a bit tricky! It's so easy to use, we need a bigger freezer so we can stock up - unfortunately only makes small amounts, so if you want enough for guests, you need to make several lots!!

Big downside is the battery life - instructions reckon 25 uses, we've not used it anything like that much, so am going to have to get a rechargeable set and recharger.

But I think it's fab, thoroughly recommend it!

2 out of 5 stars Finished ice-cream is more like a thickshake!   January 15, 2008

This is very compact and does save space, but the problem is that the blade which scrapes the icecream from the side is quite flimsy and the motor is only battery powered: it can't cope with stirring through really thick icecream, so it stops when the icecream is still very soft. It makes for a sloppy looking dessert if you try to scoop it into dessert bowls for dinner guests. The only way round this is to empty the icecream maker while the icecream is sloppy and then freeze it in a tub instead - but you don't get a very smooth icecream as a result!

I received one of these machines for Christmas. It was mid-afternoon on Christmas Day when I unwrapped it, but I still had enough time to make ice-cream for our (early-ish) Christmas tea.

I had only ever seen ice-cream makers which were huge, worktop-based machines. This one is a major contrast: it looks like my smallest milk pan (without the handle!). The motor is housed in a separate unit which clips onto the top of the lid. The paddle clips onto the bottom of the lid. That's it. No casings, no facings, no fuss. It has the simplest possible controls: just one on/off button. Couldn't be easier. It slips straight into your freezer when using it, and for storage all the bits fit neatly inside it in the kitchen cupboard.

The recipe booklet suggests you start with a vanilla, custard-based ice-cream. This sounded dreadfully dull, but the vanilla ice-cream produced just a few hours later was nothing like the stuff you buy in the supermarket: buttery-yellow, rich and creamy and very tasty. If you don't always fancy heating eggs and waiting for therm to cool to make a custard base, then you can use the yoghurt ice-cream recipe, or the egg-free option.

The suggested amounts in the recipe are not huge - 2-4 adult portions. You can make larger amounts, but it does take longer. However the suggested amounts are just right for our family: parents and a couple of small children. This is a great item for any small to medium household.

The only thing that stops this getting the full 5 stars is because the recipe booklet is no more than adequate - it's a bit dull. But that's not enough to stop this being a great gift.

4 out of 5 stars Does exactly what it's meant to. Simply.   November 5, 2007

Just tried this machine out yesterday for the first time. Made two batches of great ice-cream. Providing you get the recepe right, it does the rest. Very simple to use (and simple operation, stopping you from having to go to the freezer every half hour to stir) and super easy to clean. Would be nice if it had an alarm reminding you when to remove the ice-cream to prevent it freezing solid to the blade but just need to pay attention. Also, if it were a bit larger, that would be great, specially for diner parties and so on although you can get a good 6-8 portions out of each 'large' batch. Recommended.
