Product Description
Squirrels pose a perennial problem for many bird- lovers, yet by offering bird and squirrel feeders together, customers can feed garden birds and squirrels in separate areas of the garden allowing both to live in harmony. Squirrels will choose food that is easily accessible and with a squirrel feeder the squirrel need only open the lid and take as much food as is required. With this new food source squirrels will no longer need to destroy bird feeders to reach the limited food available.

5 out of 5 stars Great tip Julie Cutler!   December 21, 2008
Mr. Denis A. Browne (SW London, UK)
I've got a balcony rather than a garden but had the same trouble with having to replace the bird feeders every few months after the squirrels had chewed thru the wire (even on so-called "squirrel proof" design). I like the squirrels & think they've just as much right to a meal as the birds but need to get the balance right. Like Ms C I thought of distraction rather than deterrence & found the metal squirrel feeder. It took them a week or so to check it out (maybe thought it was a trap?) but now its a huge success for them & us - and altho there are a couple of die-hards who prefer hanging upside down on the birdfeeder, the rest of them have taken to it completely. We've fixed it to the wall where we can watch them without having to get out of bed. Its great seeing their different approaches - Bigtail(chief squirrel round here) elegantly lifts the lid & carefully makes his choice (once ate 20 nuts in a row) & has a leisurely chomp. The younger ones make a great show as they dive in head first, back legs & tails waving in the air.

If you can't beat 'em, distract them. I feed the birds from pole mounted feeders in my garden and the once rare squirrels had no trouble running up the pole and having a good munch (and scaring the birds off).

I've tried the mesh cage around the feeders before- there are too many cats around and the birds are too nervous to clamber between the bars.

I tried squirrel baffles on the poles. Bemused for about 10 minutes, squirrel just found the nearest tall object and jumped. I moved the feeder. Squirrel jumped seven foot (he was a bit shocked himself) and tucked in.

I bought a wooden squirrel feeder, but it was poorly designed and lasted a fortnight- the lid needs to be large enough to fit over the top of the entire top of the feeder- this fitted within it and promptly warped open. The plastic see through bit fell out due to the warping. I just couldn't be bothered to fix it.

So the metal squirrel feeder arrived yesterday and squirrel got it sussed within 5 minutes. He left the ground feeder alone and concentrated his efforts on his own personal dispenser. At the moment it's sitting on the floor (He had to know it existed to start with!) and I've filled it with peanuts and the sunflower seed-rich birdfood I use. Ok so he went and buried some of the peanuts for later round the garden, but flipping the lid was no challenge. The lid is actually stuck open at the moment (I'm going to see if some WD 40 lubricant will restore it to guard the contents from the rain again). I do like the fact that it has a smaller volume than the wooden feeders (less food out means greater hygiene).

I just draw the line at feeding pine nuts, as suggested in the accompanying leaflet! (I can't afford these for myself!)

Day 2. I hooked the feeder onto a trellis-obelisk with some stout pvc coated wire (not sure where it's going eventually). Squirrel was nipping up onto the platform the next morning and flipping the lid (which popped back down this time). Squirrel two hasn't quite worked it out yet- there was a lot of frenzied tail waving. Shouldn't take too long though- success!
