These are fairly great knives; however, I have now had three, and sadly now have none. Each has suffered the same fate; after two or three years the join between the handle and the blade becomes brittle and then just snaps. I believe that I may be at fault as on occaision the knife has ended up in the dishwasher (something that I recall that you are not supposed to do). What appears to happen is that the joint corrodes (I assume from the dishwasher powder) and this is what causes the brittleness. If you are prepared to hand wash and dry your knives each time you use them then fine, in a busy family kitchen this is a bit of a luxury and if something cannot be bunged in the dishwasher then it's not really very efficient.
I have had a set of woooden handled Sabatiers for over 20 years (not much of the wooden handles left) but the blades and handles are stil in fine form. I also have a Plastic handled Henkels which has been going strong for 10 years; sharpens like a dream and has a weight and strenght along the back that is unbeatable.
My other problem with Global's is that they lack any sense of rigidity and weight - this is fine for show chopping where a thin blade and back will make you look very good; however, as soon as the going gets tough they lack (imho) the necessary muscle. The acid test for any big knife is how you feel cutting a swede in half!
I have now replaced my global bread knife with the Henkels and while it certainly does not look as pretty it is certainly as sharp and goes in the dishwasher without complaining.

I've had this knife for 2 years now and it still cuts through any bread like a hot knife through butter.
