Surprised by the poor reviews November 25, 2008 D. Whittaker (United Kingdom) We were given this kettle as a wedding present 5 years ago. I love how fast it boils and how quiet it is (needs descaling to keep the noise down as we live in a very hard water area) I have had no problems with discolouration or the plastic breaking down. We were also given the matching toaster which we have had to replace just this year. So I would really rate the kettle! Oh, and the illumination is really cool!
LIke A Love Affair - Great To Start Then.................. July 23, 2008 Filthy Raider (Dorset, England) When we had this it was great fun to turn off the kitchen light and watch it glow! Nice performer, fast boil and in a hard water area we found it easy to descale. Then.........my wife cleaned it one day and half of it went yellowy. The filter inside began to fall apart and you often find parts of it in the bottom of your cup. It is DEFINATELY NOT a long term partner, but for a short brief time it shines brightly! Three stars for the early part, but clearly this is a flawed design for long term use.
Progress isn't all good June 9, 2008 DaveSuffolk (Suffolk, England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am a great fan of Breville, having had lots of good products from them over the years. I've had 2 similar kettles (JK14) and would rate them highly on every aspect of design. I bought this one because it was the 'updated' version of what I knew to be good. Sadly, progress isn't all good. The improvement is: - the blue/red illumination which is quite funky, but it means you have to have a switched socket or the light stays on all day and all night! The opposite of improvement (unimprovement?) is: - the spout pours badly - the kettle doesn't switch off when you lift it from the base - the lid is flimsy and feels cheap - the on/off switch has a funny 'horn' on it that doesn't fit my finger! - my one leaked water from the base when filled from cold, it was alright when hot. I returned it, and am now pining for my old JK14!
After 3 years a little disappointed. February 1, 2008 K & P (UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
We were very impressed with this kettle at the outset. In all but for the lid which is a poor and flimsy piece of engineering, it is superbly designed and has been a very welcome essential addition to our kitchen. However, very quickly the white plastic exterior began to deteriorate and finally developed a crack near the bottom of the casing and now leaks after 3 years of use. Perhaps these days we are wrong to expect a longer life for any kitchen electrical appliance but we do. While it is the very best kettle we have ever owned, performed it's daily tasks impeccably and has been a pleasure to use I am now of two minds. Judging by earlier reviews we have been lucky to achieve three years use but we are left feeling that maybe these kettles have such a fundalmental fault in the plastic materials used for the exterior casing that to buy another would be unwise.
