2 out of 5 stars Doesn't stand the test of time   May 18, 2007
raggy
This kettle looks fantastic and has many good points which lured me to buy. The easy open lid, large capacity and removable filter are my favourites. However, the first one I bought developed a leak after only 6 months. I got an exchange on warranty and I am now shopping for another kettle after only 8 months as it has just stopped working. The illuminated light has been getting dimmer over the last 4 or 5 months. Lots of good features, but not very durable.

3 out of 5 stars pity the water level indicator is hidden by the handle !   December 3, 2006

Otherwise seems to be a practical robust good-looking compact model: just what I need for use in the office. I found many 1.5-2 litre modeld but v. few catering for office use (1 litre of less) where you just need 1 cuppa!
GOOD POINTS
* Can be lifted from the poor base for refilling unlike some other compact models
* Illuminated switch
* Easy-release lid
* Filter
* Fast
Filling with water without exceeding the max level is not, however, easy as the level indicator is just behind the handle!!!

5 out of 5 stars Elegant!   September 21, 2006

The picture doesn't do justice to the gleaming elegance of this kettle. It has shiny inserts where most kettles just have black plastic - including the base, the on/off switch, the lid and an inset in the handle. The base is neat and far more discreet than most. And it works beautifully, even showing the water boiling in the blue-lit water gauge. Can't understand the problem other reviewers seem to have with cups versus litres. Since I use a kettle to boil water for cups of tea, a gauge that measures in cups is far more useful. (Minimum fill is easy enough without measuring either way - just put in enough water to reach the gauge window.) Highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars well overpriced   March 6, 2006

just took delivery and not impressed at all.first of all it wouldnt switch off when water boiled(maybe it needed a few boils first as it works now),as the other review states there is no metric measurements(how many cups in 0.7 litres? this is the minimum water level)..the kettle does not switch off when removed from base unit and if replaced on the base unit with the switch in the "on" position it could deteriorate the contacts and cause electrical "arcing"over time, this is a bad safety feature missing which is standard on many cheaper models.As with so many kettles the plastic on/off switch looks too vunerable and could easily be broken if knocked while filling kettle in the sink... just found out that this kettle was rated 20 out of 25 by "which" consumer magazines review of kettles ..and i can see why!..pay more(or less) and get something else is my advice as it is way overpriced

4 out of 5 stars Does its job but has a few minor flaws   January 9, 2006

Being a water kettle, the Breville JK85's purpose is, of course, boiling water - which it does. Let me briefly sum up what I like about this kettle:

(+) The concealed heating element makes cleaning a lot easier.
(+) The back where you can see the water level lights up blue when in operation. Looks nice.
(+) Unlike my previous kettle, this one does not drip.
(+) Being able to open the lid at the touch of a button is very convenient.

However, there are also some minor flaws with these unit:

(-) The water level indicator has only a very vague scale and shows only cups - there are no metric indicators.
(-) The electric cable to hook the kettle up to the power supply is very stiff, making it difficult to roll it up in the base. Also, because the cable is so thick, pushing the cable into the hole of the base slightly damages the insulation of the cable. It is not a safety risk but nevertheless a design flaw.

Overall, I still recommend this kettle on the basis that it performs its main function well.
