1 out of 5 stars Awful Waste of Money!   January 2, 2009

I bought this wok as a present for my husband. He is a very keen ccok and goes through cheaper woks in months. What a mistake!

Although we have several Le Crueset items, which we have always been delighted with, we quickly realised that their heavy ironware simply does not lend itself to this kind of Chinese cooking.

For a start the wok is much too heavy and does not heat thoroughly all the way through. It burns in the middle and in spite of following all the instructions, it simply burns the food as soon as it touches the base.

This wok is going into the bin! What a waste of 80!

My next purchase will be SKK.

3 out of 5 stars Le Creuset cast iron wok   October 23, 2008

This wok is lovely but the pictures show a wire grate inside it for warming food on whilst other food is cooking in the wok, I found this misleading because it wasnt in the box nor mentioned on the packaging.

4 out of 5 stars Le Creuset enamelled 36 cm CAST IRON WOK   March 10, 2008

with side handles and a glass lid.

Sturdy, functional design and attractive enough to take to the table!

Large flat base, for maximum and even heat distribution, making it easy to move ingredients around and possibly store some against the rounded sides, for e.g. meat to prevent overcooking.
Stir-frying/braising/steaming/poaching on any heat source, including induction.

Recipe leaflet included - although limited this does give you a start if new to this version of healthy cooking!

The classic rounded interior is ideal for stir frying and my favourite recipe using my Wok is a handed-down version of a `Prawn and Vegetable Stir Fry', but there is a useful section entitled:-

`Woks and Moroccan Tagines'

in the book:-

`The Cast Iron Way to Cook', by Sue Cutts,
one of Le Creuset's consultants, which gives a guide to the use of the Le Creuset Wok, as well as some delicious recipes, including :-

`Peppered Pork Stir-Fry'
and
`Braised Orange Duck'

Available in a variety of colours, at Amazon, today, some at great prices!

5 out of 5 stars The perfect wok?   March 7, 2008

Although quite pricey, this is a wonderful, versatile pan to own. I use it frequently for stir-fry cooking with consistently good results. It's so easy to put ingredients to the side while frying other ingredients, then mix them together. This pan is a perfect fit on my electric hob - the base is exactly the same diameter as the small ring, thus optimising the heat distribution. Also, it's fun to use! So, dig deep into your wallet and get wokking!

5 out of 5 stars Versatile High Quality product a Real Wok   March 2, 2008

I had an electric wok before I bought the le Creuset. The problem with the electric wok (by a different manufacturer) was that it was not a proper wok. A proper wok is hemispherical, round shaped like a bowl, whereas the electric wok had a flattened shape. The advantage of a real wok shape is that less oil or butter is used for cooking, this means that fewer calories are incorporated into the meal. Unless one is unsure of how much oil may be used, a tablespoon of oil may used in the Le Creuset whilst the flat bottomed type needs almost two tablespoons. One tablespoon of oil is about 120 calories. There is also another advantage as the proper wok has sides that are not as steep as the flat bottomed 'woks' this feature allows food that is cooked to be raised further up the sides so as to not overcook it. But the reason why I had to replace the electric wok is that the non-stick surface failed after two years, making it virtually useless. The le Crueset by contrast, although more expensive is meant to build up a coating from oil so that it has a durable self renewing non-stick surface. It's cast iron body makes for a product that can be used at medium temperatures and retains the heat for much longer. Unless the wok is dropped I can imagine it being used for hundreds of years!

The wok as I have explained is a proper bowl shaped cooking utensil and to enable it to be used on my electric cooker. It is cast with a flat base that provides a perfect surface for heating.

The wok has a glass lid that enables food to cooked in a variety of ways. My only worry it that great care will need to be taken to make sure the user doesn't break the glass lid accidently. Although it can be replaced.
