5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Machine   June 23, 2007

I have owned this Vax for a number of years and it works perfectly every time. I have always used it for cleaning the carpets, having a dog, this can be quite often. It brings the carpets up nice and clean and they dry fairly swiftly. For the first time I actually used it as a dry cleaner and it worked very well. It is a bit of a nuisance having to convert it from wet to dry but other than that its very good. I only used it because my normal Dyson machine is playing up.

So its a good purchase overall.

I bought this as my doggie had made my carpet filthy and I didn't want to go to the huge expensive of hiring floor cleaners to come and clean my carpets.

The Vax really does the job and has brought the carpets up brilliantly.

It has an efficient drying system so carpets are dry overnight pretty much.
It lifts out all hair and dirt.

I would highly recommend this to anyone. Brilliant.

4 out of 5 stars Still the best for your money   September 21, 2006

The Vax is somthing I grew up with as the house's main hoover. When they first came out they were the best money could buy, and lasted longer than most people could belive, our own lasted just over ten years, which for any vaccum is a hell of an achivement. The newer 3 in 1 which we now have (this one infact) is basicly the same design, modernised and still a scary shade of orange.
The vaccum feature is the same as most, only with a bit more power, and an inconveniant way of storing the tools (they slot onto the side of the barrel and get knocked off easily when you move it about) but if you want a good job done, this is among the best to do it with.
When it comes to cleaning, the first time can be tricky since the instructions are more a picture book than anything else, but once you figure it out, converting it from vaccum to cleaner shouldnt take more than five minutes. The cleaning head is not the old style little box this time round, its a full hoover head, only transparent with a tube section. the cleaning ability is the same as it always was, a great job so long as you dont use the Vax AAA solution, its a bit too mild for most jobs, and youll end up needing to do a second round. Astonish do a decent one for less than a quid so get that if you can.
The claim that it will extend the life of your carpets really is true, every time you clean, youll be amazed how much dirt came out, and mow much cleaner it looks, obviously your carpets will still die off after time, no machine can undo constant abuse by size 11 feet.
For a multi roll cleaner this is the one for the job, plus what you would spend on hiring a seperate cleaner would pay for one of these after the third job. only drawback being its fairly big, and needs a bit of space to store teh cleaner section when your not using it (its about the size of a pizza tray and 9 inches thick)

3 out of 5 stars Jack of all trades , master of none   October 15, 2005

When I purchased this unit it was solely for the purpose of cleaning carpets and its ability to be used as a vaccuum cleaner was of secondary importance to me.

My first impression was that it was fiddly to set up for carpet cleaning. The manual/documentation are relatively poor, but I did manage to figure it out. The manual is mainly pictures and very few words.

Performance as a carpet cleaner seems to be pretty good - although I've never used any other machine, so I've no reference point to compare it to. Certainly took a lot of dirt out of our carpets and left them looking much newer. Also worth pointing out that although it put out a lot more liquid than it pulled back, that the carpets did indeed dry within a few hours as it claims.

I've used it as a vaccuum cleaner when cleaning the car out - did the job fine. Reasonable selection of tools

Because this unit is designed to serve multiple functions, you're left having to mess on with various bits and pieces (like filter cone vs clean water bucket and running the water feed pipe down the vac tube) to switch between cleaner/vaccuum. It can be tiresome to keep chopping and changing it around.

At the end of the day, it does what it does reasonably well. I would describe it as jack of all trades, master of none.
