Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The Ultimate Hand Made Toaster. Sandwich cages can be inserted into any slot. The Dualit Vario Toaster combines simplicity and sophistication perfectly. With extra wide 28mm slots to accommodate a Sandwich Cage and the award winning ProHeat elements, a patented design which increases toasting efficiency & element longevity, every toaster has a removable crumb tray and an adjustable rear foot. Manually operated the Dualit toaster features switches to control the degree of browning and an ejector system which means that the toast does not pop up but stays warm until the ejector lever is pushed up. Please Note: All electrical products sold by cookinstyle (InStyle Products Limited) are supplied with a UK 3 pin plug.

Amazon.co.uk Review
The Dualit Vario toaster makes great toast, looks stunning and is built to last. This two-slice model has a classic stainless steel finish. The slots are 28 mm wide with self-adjusting wire guards to automatically accommodate a broad range of bread thicknesses. The slots also support the separately available sandwich cage, which is a useful addition for making toasted sandwiches, buns and crumpets, though it is possible to toast the latter without a cage.

The Dualit is a sturdy beast with a retro look. It weighs in at around 3.5 kg and has minimal controls, all with a reassuringly solid feel. The red backlit slot selector switch lights up to tell you when the toaster is in use and can be set for one or two slices. This is important, as the toaster uses a patented ProHeat element that is optimised to quickly produce evenly cooked toast. However, the element's lifespan may be shortened if a slot is regularly heated while empty. A black rotary time switch means that you need to determine how long you want to toast each and every time you use the Dualit, rather than relying on a default setting as seen with other toasters.

One of the advantages of the Dualit toaster is that the bread doesn't pop up when the timer is finished. Instead, you need to press down the central black ejector knob to remove your toast. This ensures that your toast stays warm for longer if you are not there to remove it straightaway. Another component of note is a useful slide-out crumb tray. Results are impressive, with beautifully even toasting in all slots and up to 65 slices per hour (two medium slices from cold takes around 2 minutes). However, the most compelling reason for putting a Dualit toaster in your kitchen is its perfect blend of durability and style. --Heather Wilson

5 out of 5 stars Good old Dualit   August 23, 2008

To those who complain one can't leave the toaster unattended because of the fire hazard I can only suggest you are not running your household effectively. If a member of my below-stairs staff left their post whilst attending to the preparation of my toast in the morning, I'd have them flogged.

Furthermore, unlike the bread toasting devices in vogue with johnny foreigner, the good old Dualit can be repaired should anything wear out ( or so the estate handyman tells me). I believe this also has environmental benefits if the young green people are to be believed.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Toaster - not perfect - but it should be!   April 29, 2008

When i was in the market to buy a new toaster for our new shabby chic kitchen, i was after something to last. I remember at university the kitchens used 6 or 8 slot versions of these toasters and i was impresed with how quick they were. This seemed to be due to the elements in the toaster glowing bright red, so i expected my new toasters elements to be the same...but ther dont...which was disapointing. The elements are covered with a heat proof plastic which cleverly protects the element from probing knives, this may have something to do with why the element doesnt get as hot as the ones i saw at uni. Also a 'not as hot' element will last longer. However, despite the other disapointing thing (flimsy crumb tray) it does the job, and the toaster cages do make a nice toastie provided you dont overload the filling or use to thick a slice of bread!

...I'm a bit concerned about the timer failures some have had...They are sure not as well built as they were 20 years ago. When or if the timer fails i will see what the chinese part number is and see if i can buy them cheap on the et somewhere...you useualy can!

Overall its still a good toaster..probably the last you'll ever buy.

1 out of 5 stars Lethal. Don't buy one.   March 21, 2008

How this product got through safety checks I will never know. The timer sticks and, when it does, the toaster just keeps toasting. I came down from the bathroom because the smoke alarm went off and, instead of a couple of pieces of toast waiting for me, I had a kitchen filled with smoke, and more billowing out of the toaster. Yes, it looks cool. It may even still look cool after you retrieve it from the remains of your house after the fire is out. If you're rich, buy ten and destroy them - you may have saved someone's life.

1 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy - Fire hazard   February 10, 2008

The clockwork timer on our Dualit toaster has failed after about 5 years. Not bad service you might think, but the issue is it does not fail safe and the first time it happens the toaster will stay switched on. If you are not in the room at the time to turn it off you can imagine the consequence.

1 out of 5 stars Timer Failure Could Have Burnt My House Down!!   January 1, 2008

The timer on my toaster sticks on which makes it very dangerous. You have to stay with it while toasting or it will just stay on. Definitely not worth the money - I expected more from Dualit
