The Dualit Vario toaster makes great toast, looks stunning and is built to last. This four-slice model has a classic stainless steel finish. The slots are 28 mm wide with self-adjusting wire guards to automatically accommodate a broad range of bread thicknesses. The slots also support the separately available sandwich cage, which is a useful addition for making toasted sandwiches, buns and crumpets, though it is possible to toast the latter without a cage. The Dualit is a sturdy beast with a retro look. It weighs in at around 4.25 kg and has minimal controls, all with a reassuringly solid feel. The red backlit slot selector switch lights up to tell you when the toaster is in use and can be set for two or four slices. This is important, as the toaster uses a patented ProHeat element that is optimised to quickly produce evenly cooked toast. However, the element's lifespan may be shortened if a slot is regularly heated while empty. A black rotary time switch means that you need to determine how long you want to toast each and every time you use the Dualit, rather than relying on a default setting as seen with other toasters. One of the advantages of the Dualit toaster is that the bread doesn't pop up when the timer is finished. Instead, you need to press down the central black ejector knob to remove your toast. This ensures that your toast stays warm for longer if you are not there to remove it straightaway. Another component of note is a useful slide-out crumb tray. Results are impressive, with beautifully even toasting in all slots and up to 130 slices per hour (four medium slices from cold takes around two minutes). After using bargain basement toasters for over 20 years decided to take plunge and go for the iconic, much talked about Dualit.
The Toaster looks great and perfoms pretty well, the points I would like raise are that it is a bit pricey for a toaster that requires you to manually determine how long you want to toast, rather than my 15 quid toaster that stayed on automatic and worked fine. I end up not puttng enough time on Dualit and re-doing it or put too much time and burn it. It is also rather noisey in operation (timer and crackling sound of element)and often forget to lift toast out as it does not pop-up, meant to keep toast warmer, but i just forget about it and it stays in toaster, cold, until I return some time later.
Overall I think the rave reviews and sparkling ratings for this product comes from the fact that people, once they have forked out over 100 for a toaster and it looks pretty good on sideboard, they feel they have to justify their extravagance and are more fashion conscious and dare I say it pretentious. It's a good toaster, don't get me wrong, but please it's just a toaster. Lets hope it lasts as long as my 15 kenwood did.

I really cannot fault this appliance. It performs exactly as I hoped. Delivery was next morning - which considering I only ordered the toaster the afternoon before, was quicker than if I had gone to the local shops for it!! It is beautifully-crafted - built like a battleship - and will not disappoint.

We have now had this toaster for two years and the only thing that has stopped me replacing it is how much it cost. Toast is striped - burnt in some places, hardly touched in others. Timing is hit and miss. We did get the Dualit kettle as well and that was even worse - I did replace that for a cheap and cheerful Morphy Richards which doesn't look as smart but does the job much better.

This toaster is dreadful. The 'self aligning slots' do not work so you get burnt toast on one side and under toasted on the other, and this is when using thick sliced bread. There is no cancel button, or variable browning control, when you set the timer you can't change it so if you accidently set the timer for 5 minutes the toaster will run for 5 minutes and you have to keep checking to make sure your toast doesn't burn and then try and remove your toast without burning your fingers. You have to guess how long your toast might take then keep checking it, who has time to do this first thing in the morning? Also the timer is really noisy. Its a complete waste of money, do not buy it!!

Having had our Dualit for 5 years now, an element has broken.
OK, so it has broken, but the good news is that for 5 and 20 minutes of patience, you can fix your Dualit. Just buy a new element. Make sure you buy the correct type - there are two: 'end' elements and 'middle' elements, with the middle ones being higher wattage because they're toasting two bits of bread at once.
Judging by the simple internal design, the toaster is likely to keep going for many many years. Crudely, 5/ 10 every 5 years is cheaper (and more ecological) than a complete new toaster every 2 or 3 years as we have had to do before the Dualit.
On the toasting front, it toasts far more evenly than any other toaster we've had, and you can leave the toast in for several minutes to keep warm because the metal body retains heat. It takes a little practice to get used to the timer, but once you do its easy - white is 1.5 notches, brown is 2, etc.
I would thoroughly recommend one for a hassle-free kitchen...
