5 out of 5 stars A Rolex for 10 pounds   June 30, 2008
Baz (Edinburgh)
This watch is quality, i have owned a number of more expensive time pieces and none are as reliable as this one. Its not very fancy, but then its only 8 pound 50 so what do you expect. The great thing is that its as accurate a time keeper as a Rolex or omega and is a mere fraction of the cost.

4 out of 5 stars Does exactly what it says on the tin.   June 29, 2008
Charles Dyer (London)
No, it's not particularly fancy looking. No it doesn't do much. No, it won't wow anyone. But it will keep going forever... and ever... and ever. If you want something that attaches to your wrist and counts seconds, hours and minutes, presenting them in a clear and legible fashion, this is your watch. What's more, if you lead a fairly active lifestyle and don't want to have to worry about damaging your watch, fear not. The strap will unfortunately snap before the watch ever dies but, to be fair, you have to be fairly rough with it. The watch itself is near indestructible. Dropped, submerged, kicked, stood on and hit, it will still keep going and that goes for the battery as well.

5 out of 5 stars Best watch in the world?   May 31, 2008
Baz (Manchester, England)
Some things are destined to become classics. Whether that's by luck or design is a moot point. But there's little doubt that the W-59 has been around long enough to be considered a classic. I've owned many watches over the years, including a Rolex, but for me this is probably the best watch in the world. A pretty bold statement, but here's why I think it's impossible to beat:

I'm a simple guy and simplicity is key. Einstein once said that everything should be made as simple as possible but no simpler, and one of the main lessons of my life has been that less is definitely more. I do not want to have to work out what the time is from something the size of a brick that looks like a flight deck. Nor do I want to worry that I'm going to scratch the glass or case, have expensive repair bills, lose it, or have it stolen. All major drawbacks proportionate with expensive, but by no means necessarily better, things. Neither is my watch a fashion accessory for me. So I simply could not care less whether the W-59 has 'retro' appeal. Personally, I think it looks neat (the best design is timeless - pun intended). Beautifully small and light, it's nevertheless easy to read and easy to set, has an automatic calendar (no faffing around changing the date), an alarm (which is loud enough to wake me), a backlight, a chronograph (should you need one - but great for boiling eggs, etc), it's water resistant to 5 bar and has a 7 year battery life. In just over a month from new my watch has gained less than seven seconds. I've had watches costing hundreds that can't match that. In short, this watch does everything I want a watch to be/do - with absolutety no fuss. It's accurate, functional, tough and ludicrously cheap. And in terms of value for money, it's way off the scale. The only other things that come close are Bic pens and sliced bread.

I love this watch. If only everything in life were as simple or reliable. Minimalist genius from Casio. As they have for the past twenty-odd years, I hope that they continue to realise what they've got here and keep on making this model into the twenty-second century and beyond. The last thing we simple guys want is for some moron marketing exec to decide that something as no-nonsense and inspired as this is too outmoded.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect watch   March 19, 2008

I've had this for over 5 years now, and although the strap did break, the actual watch itself is perfectly functional. It has survived numerous cases of accidentally being thrown in the washing machine in a pocket, and general clumsy battering around, showing no battery deterioration either.

I found it also pretty comfortable to wear, since it is a pretty lightweight watch compared to some chunkier digital watches. Basically it just doesn't get in the way either thanks to its size.

It may not be fancy but it is superb value for money when it comes to the basic functionality and durability.

5 out of 5 stars Great watch   January 20, 2008

I still have one that I bought about 10 years ago. The strap split some years ago but other than that, its still going strong! The alarm is very handy and seems to be loud enough to wake me most of the time.
Suggest that if the strap breaks on yours (which it inevitably will) you replace it (eg with a velcro strap) and it will see out several more years!
My dad loves this casio and usually buys another identical one when the strap breaks!
