Product Description

Save energy and money with Eco Kettle - the best selling eco gadget in the UK, at the lowest available price from Ethicalsuperstore.com. Until now, accurately measuring the amount of water to be boiled in your kettle has been all but impossible. The result? It is estimated that, on average, we boil twice the volume of water needed every time. Which means twice as much energy, twice as much time. With a 3kW kettle that’s the same as wasting the energy of around 50 light bulbs!

The Eco Kettle is different: its internal reservoir holds a full capacity of water ready for use, while the measuring button allows any quantity – from a single cupful to full capacity – to be released into the separate chamber for boiling.

The result? Exactly the right amount of water every time you boil – and no more waste.

The Eco Kettle has been approved by the Good Housekeeping Institute and is recommended by Powergen as a pioneering product in the battle to save energy in the nation's homes. During independent consumer trials directed by the Energy Saving Trust, the Eco Kettle used over 30% less energy than standard kettles.

Eco Kettle features include:

  • 3kW stainless steel concealed heating element
  • Steam control and boil-dry protection
  • Cordless; 360 degree base with cord storage
  • Locking lid with illuminated on-off switch
  • Washable limescale filter
  • 230 volts AC
  • 1.5 litre capacity
  • 12 months warranty

2 out of 5 stars not brilliant   August 24, 2008
Deedy (Brighton, England)
Sounds a good idea, but turns out rather gimmicky. The water release button need quite heavy pressure and my partner who is quite elderly has difficulty applying enough pressure. It is also difficult to see the level in the boiling compartment. One is also, on average, handling and pouring from a heavier kettle than when using a partly filled conventional electric kettle. I bought it because I needed a new kettle. If you don't my advice is to stick with the conventional type and use a cup to measure the water.

5 out of 5 stars So far, so good!   August 22, 2008
Darchaeg (Edinburgh, UK)
We just purchased this kettle on 18 August 2008 and have had it a few days now. We were worried by the negative reviews given by other Amazon users, but we have not found any of the problems these reviews mention. I'll go through the main negative points mentioned in the reviews and hopefully this will help others make a decision about whether to buy this kettle.

1. The 'spitting' or 'scalding' issue: We have not experienced this problem at all. It's possible our kettle is a newer version that has corrected this problem, but it's impossible to tell. I have poured the kettle immediately upon boiling and the pouring is smooth, no 'spitting' or 'scalding' at all.

2. "The kettle is too heavy": The kettle itself is not heavy. If you fill the kettle's reservoir quite high so you do not have to return to the tap very often, the amount of water you put in will obviously make it heavy. This would be true of any kettle because it's the weight of the water that's the issue!

3. "The button to release the water is too stiff": This may be a problem if you have disability issues, especially arthritis. Otherwise, yes it's a bit stiff, but we have not found it to be a problem. It may loosen up with use.

4. "The amount suggested for a cuppa is too small": This is really nit-picky, as you release the amount you want by simply holding down the button. Experiment a few times and you'll figure out exactly how much your favourite mug actually needs. Make a mental note of that amount reached in the boiling chamber, and you'll always know how long to hold the button. It's a tiny bit of guesswork, but hardly a fault of the kettle or the manufacturers. Everyone has different sizes of tea cups and mugs. Maybe in future the manufacturers should give different gradients on the side of the boiling chamber that corresponds to different mug sizes.

2 out of 5 stars Eco Kettle goes Kapput   August 17, 2008
Sa Coulthard (UK)
I originally loved this kettle: saves energy, boils faster and is a big tick in the 'green' product box. Once you got used to filling the boiling chamber, it even became second nature to use.

However, it just keeps breaking. The first one we had leaked water from the lid when you poured it and thus needed changing. Had the replacement for about 10 months and in that time it's blown one fuse, which I replaced, and has now has just mysteriously died. It's not like it has had intensive use either, perhaps being used twice a day. It's a real shame and I won't be buying a 3rd!

4 out of 5 stars Eco Kettle   July 24, 2008
Mr. G. MORRIS (UK)
Been using one of these beauties for a few weeks now. I hesitated initially due to some of the negative comments here.
The Eco Kettle boils quickly and quietly and generally speaking I'm very pleased with it. It's great to see a manufacturer providing a product like this. It's a wonder there aren't more Eco products of this quality.

- Some of the comments have been along the lines of "too heavy". Well, check the 'packaged weight' description of the other kettles on Amazon, the top two best-sellers are heavier than the Eco. In daily use, perhaps yes, a little heavier than a non-Eco, but that's accounted for by the additional volume of water contained but not boiled. Potentially 1.5 litres.
- "Spits out boiling water" Well... yes, it can and it does. Very rarely. It seems to me that when using a non-Eco kettle, the usual routine is to wander off whilst it boils, returning to a cooling kettle. The temptation with the Eco is to wait for it to boil as it does so very quickly. On pouring the water if a small amount of water is unused it naturally falls back onto the (still very hot) heating plate in the boiling chamber and occasionally 'spits'. It's not a big problem, I experience it very rarely and can live with it quite happily. It's an area the manufacturer might want to address, but it's no deal breaker...

How well it performs long-term..? Time will tell!

So... 10/10 for effort. 8/10 for design.
