Appropriately named, the ORKA oven mitt looks like a whale. It will swim in to pull lobsters from boiling water or allow you to lift a basket of French fries from the deep fryer. Made of non-porous, food-grade silicone, the mitt is designed to withstand temperatures up to 300 degrees Celsius without melting, staining or letting in moisture. This makes the ORKA ideal for cooking with boiling water or oil or using over grills or open flames. Slip-resistant "teeth" on the mitt's grasping surface provide a sure grip when lifting greasy or wet pots. At 11 inches long, the mitt is long enough to protect the forearm and fit either right or left hands of all sizes. For easy cleaning, the ORKA goes into the dishwasher with the rest of your pots and pans. I bought two of these for my husband as a Christmas present (I know very romantic) but he did say he liked the idea of them.
He was so fed up with me buying the cloth type oven gloves, they don't seem thick enough, you end up burning yourself when getting trays out of the oven (we have an aga so maybe that makes a difference, compared to a gas or electric oven say, as you have to put your hands in the oven further as it is slighty deeper). So a longer length glove is needed almost like a gauntlet or one of those gloves that hawkers use when they have their bird of prey with them.
Anyway I saw these gloves advertised in a Lakeland brochure and thought super idea kill two birds with one stone, oven glove dilema sorted along with Christmas present. Well he had to use them straight away, brilliant result, more cooking done by husband. As these goves are not feminine in design the man of the house can still look cool whilst cooking but also be safe from splashes and scalds whilst putting things in and out of the oven.
The other best thing is that they are dishwasher safe, so after a few uses pop them into machine along with dirty dishes and back to new, our pair are now two years old and still going strong after being used every day, so value for money well worth the price especially compared to the price and quality of cloth ones.
The only one draw back he says though is that they don't bend enough, but have recently noticed that there is a flexible model just on the market.
No more burnt hands and a sneaky way of getting the man of the house to cook, well most men like new gadgets don't they?
Wanted to try them out to see if they work if you do a barbie using them, (you know no more splashed hands hopefully) but so far the weather hasn't been that suitable.
Would be good if they did them in different colours then you could co-ordinate them with your kitchen, or in funky designs.

Bought one of these a while back with high hopes.
Pros:
Funky cool blue looking thing
Grips well with its teeth
Quite happily survives dishwasher
Really does resist heat
Does not get saturated with oil or water and transmit heat like traditional mitts can
Cons:
Awkward to use (I'm used to double-ended oven mitts) especially when getting roasting dishes out
Looks worrying in use, like the plastic might melt!
Just generally rather clumsy to use
Now mine stays in the drawer and I stick with "old school" mitts.
However. Come barbeque time it's great. If like me you usually end up singing the hair on your hands & wrists then this really can help. I don't use it every time but it's good for longer grilling sessions.

I got a couple of these because you can wash them and they are better looking than a normal glove. But they are not fantastic. Two problems I have noticed are they sometimes let heat through in the thinner bits of the glove - especially near the ridges where you grip around the fingers- not enough to burn you but quite hot all the same. The second problem is they are quite in flexible so be careful not to drop stuff. Also why to they sell them singly? You really need two which is quite expensive.

There's no doubt that the glove can take the temperatures described, however, the inflexible design of the glove makes it very hard to actually grasp anything. Its virtually impossible to get a hot plate out of a microwave, the ovens not much better either. On the whole, I could have lived without it. Good idea, not practicle
