Grinds too fine July 24, 2008 D. P. Jacob (Leicester UK) This is a handsome machine and I prefer it to others I have owned. However, as another reviewer has stated, the machine only does fine grind. The variation is almost non-existent so it is useless for filter, percolater and arguably for cafetiere also. A really major design flaw imo.. No doubt the person who designed it doesn't actually know much about coffee.
Excellent Value June 29, 2008 Jack Aubrey (UK) This is my third grinder in about 10 years and it's the best. My first was cheap, noisy and minced the beans. The second was more expensive than the Dualit and was also noisy and very fiddly to use. I've had the Dualit for about six weeks and I'm really pleased with it. There are four things I particularly like. It's very quiet. It grinds the beans finer than either of my previous machines and this made a big difference to the flavour of the espresso. The grinding head is easy to remove and clean, which will help with long term reliability. And the sump which collects the grind is beautifully designed so that when you come to transfer the grind into the filter it sits neatly in your hand and there is no mess. Of course, I don't know how reliable it will be but these early signs are reassuring. It's well worth the price.
Frustrating - only good for espresso June 24, 2008 Ms. A. C. Bettinson (UK) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had a krups machine which packed up very soon after I bought it, so I replaced it with this.... but it is only really any good for espresso and crap for cafetiere as it doesn't grind to anything but fine, despite the varous setting options. Frustratingly I now have two grinders - the krups one from my partners house I bought for when I was staying up there... before the other one went wrong obviously! Have given it a three as it is smart, good price, face and quiet, and easy to use, but only buy this if you want espresso. Am going to look for a gtinder which is well priced and does it all so I can return this.
Useless for coarse grinds, cafetieres, percolators, etc. March 28, 2008 sirhan sirhan (glasgow, uk) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Bought this for my wife (a barista) based on all the good reviews here, but even the coarsest setting is far too fine for a French press and we are returning it. My wife was really disappointed. I'm sure this is a great grinder for espresso because it produces a wide range of really fine and even grinds, but my wife says she wouldn't even recommend it for anything coarser than a cone-filter drip coffee machine.
Excellent Burr grinder for home use February 17, 2008 W. Taylor-maynard (West Sussex, England) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I use this grinder for my Gaggia expresso machine and it is excellent value for money. On the lowest setting it is actually too fine even for expresso producing a powdered taste, so it is perfect when the right setting is found. I was paying 4.79 for a tin of Illy coffee (which is amazing) but now I can grind my own from a bag for 1.39 and can try all types of coffee beans, so this machine will pay for itself in a short time. Commercial machines cost several hundred pounds so this is a real bargain for the home. Something worth sharing is I was having real problems with my Gaggia extracting sufficient crema, at one point the water was hardly coming out. I contacted Gaggia whom advised me to descale and it has never worked as well. I have soft water and don't see any limescale build-up so be advised, descale every 6 months. For those who don't know the difference, crema is produced when the oil is extracted from the bean (under pressure) producing that tanned brown colour, unlike filtered coffee. Enjoy your coffee...
