I bought this because I got sick of accidentally grating my knuckles when grating cheese, especially small hard cheeses like parmigiana. I'm pleased to report that this food mill is perfect for that job.
It comes with three 'drums' - a slicer (haven't used it yet), a 'grater' (larger holes) and a 'shredder' (smaller holes). The shredder is perfect for parmesan and other hard cheeses - it makes very quick work of them. The mill can hold a pretty large piece of cheese in its 'hopper' and grates the whole thing in seconds, so the whole job is much quicker than with a hand grater, and less messy as all the grated cheese comes out of a small hole in the side of the drum. The larger grater drum works well with cheddar. Just make sure you tilt it slightly so the grated cheese falls straight out, otherwise it can get a bit jammed up!
As the description says, you can also use it to grind nuts and slice vegetables, so it's pretty versatile. It's also easy to clean and dishwasher safe.
Given that it costs about the same as a decent manual grater, it does a better job quicker (and safer) and does more besides, I'd highly recommend this product.
