A bit messy but delicious coffee October 6, 2008 S. Taylor (London) I bought this when it cost about 115 pounds about 5 months ago - the price seems to vary a lot over time. Initially I wanted a dual coffee maker: filter and espresso, but these machines are so large so I decided to get an expresso maker and use a cafetiere for filter - an idea which has worked well so far. This is a really nice looking machine and quite small which is a plus. It does take a little getting used to, but once you have done it a couple of times, it's easy. The coffee it produces is delicious with a great crema, the milk is hot and frothy. However, it does seem to drip (coffee and milk spouts) but it's really not a big deal - coffee makers all need cleaning after use anyway so a couple extra wipes with a cloth is not a problem. One word of caution: the first time I washed the removable base to wash it, I sliced my finger open quite deeply on the metal grid - the edges are very sharp. Overall a nice little machine that makes good coffee and doesn't cost a fortune.
Looks good but is so slow August 18, 2008 john dryburgh (UK) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
(See comments below - 3 star rating would be upgraded to 4 if I could change it.) I'm not sure if it's the machine that's slow by design or if I'm expecting too much, but it is REALLY slow to dispense coffee using ground coffee. This is my 3rd Delonghi and it is by far the slowest one I've used - in fact, I through my last one out as the pump appeared to have lost pressure and was also dispensing very slowly. I'm using shop-bought, ready ground coffee (Illy Espresso, cafe Macinato). I've made sure that I'm not over-tamping it and still it's very slow. By the time that the pump has got to full pressure the amount of coffee coming out of the machine is down to a slow dribble and it take far too long to finish the dispense. Apart from that, the machine looks good and doesn't make to much noise - unlike some other Delonghi machines I've tried. I think I'm going to have to send this one back to Amazon (what a pain in the butt that whole procedure is) and get a replacement. Looks like I'll be drinking plunger coffee for a while, again. If I get a replacement and it works better, then I'll let you know. I'd be interested to hear if anyone else thinks it's slow and what is your dispense time for a double espresso? Edit - decided to send it back to Amazon. Used the online returns and it was impressive. Monday at 5pm, went through online returns procedure and printed out barcode labels and packed machine away in original box, wrapped in black bag and affixed labels. DHL was automatically arranged to collect machine next day. DHL arrived 10am next morning (Tuesday) and took box away. Wednesday morning, 9.45am new machine arrives. WOW! New Machine works much better and pump seems fine. Coffee dispenses perfectly and as quickly as I expected. Thanks to Amazon for great service and customer support. This is the first time I've had to return anything to them and it was painless.
Pass July 20, 2008 Mr. R. Thornton (Spain) Having used a stove coffee maker for sometime I thought to save having to boil the milk separately and maybe get a better cup of coffee I would buy a electric coffee maker. Over 2 days I tried all the options and found the coffee produced was like coffee flavoured hot water without any body in it. The milk froather is too fiddly and needs a radical redesign as mentioned in other reviews. I even got the shop to finely grind the Columbian beans for me in case my grinder was too coarse. Needless to say I took it back and was refunded and will stick with my existing maker.
Excellent machine for this price July 13, 2008 Mr. A. Macleod (Devon, UK) This was my second espresso machine, having recently upgraded to a Gaggia Classic. I would highly recommend this machine, it makes an excellent espresso and the milkfrother is also very good as well as being more robust than some machines in this price range. However, it has two downfalls. Firstly the machine is VERY noisy whilst operating, and secondly there is onlyspace for a double or single espresso cup under the nozzle-not very handy when you're making a latte or cappuccino! This means using three cups - one to make espresso, one to froth the milk in and one to drink from as it doesn't come with a milk jug, a lot of work for one cup! Despite this its probably the best machine you'll get for under 100.
Makes a great cappuccino June 25, 2008 Catherine Smith (Wales, uk) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love this machine. if like me you like a mug of coffee the measurements take some working out and you have to remove the tray. When frothing milk, leave the mug underneath and lay a damp cloth underneath as the coffee will keep dripping for a bit. I know this all sounds rather anoying but for a cappaccino with an inch and a half head it is worth it. You also get 18 pods with it that are over 5 in some shops. the only down side is that it is not designed for jugs.
