1 out of 5 stars When will the Tin be Opened? That is the Question.   August 22, 2008

Recently bought this product as so fed up with wrestling with tin openers, my husband was a little dubious when I mentioned I was going to purchase one, told me to look at review sites etc, as ones he had used before all seemed to be of the same ilke (useless, a waste of money) is it just a man thing that if a woman suggests something electrical and gadgety that they will end up buying the wrong useless piece of kit?

The one I had many years ago was good, so I thought this one with all the extra bits would be better but no.

It is quite a light piece of kit, doesn't feel substantial on (thin plastic really) trying the bottle opening part it fell over. The older versions were really solid and heavy.

Maybe I should have listened to him and saved some money and also my temper....

On getting it out of the box I was really looking forward to using it (kids tinned meals from now on, mum has a new toy!) I was so disappointed, no matter how I tried to get the tin opener to work, I am sure you need a degree in holding the tin at required level/must be a certain knack, one I am sure I wasn't getting, it would not open, it locked onto the tin alright but then it just didn't go round and cut it, it just kept making a funny noise then the magnet kept coming away from the machine (maybe I had one made late Friday evening!). I spent more time trying to get the dammed bit attached to the machine then actually cooking the dinner.

After several attempts and lots and lots of lost temper and swear words I gave up. Mu husband than came into the kitchen and asked how it was (how on earth he didn't hear my racket, probably did and thought leave her to it!). Had to say yes fine, to only have another try and still no luck, eventually asked him to give it a whirl as I thought it was just me but no even he couldn't get it to work. Well maybe he was right afterall, a waste of money. Good idea, but sadly it doesn't pull the mustard!

Have read other reviews and they seem to think it great, maybe I got a faulty one, who knows but I wouldn't get another.

The only plus side is that on a work top it looks good quite a retro look to it but that is about all.

5 out of 5 stars No more struggling to open cans   August 4, 2008
Mrs. C. Wearn (Chislehurst Kent UK)
This can opener is better than I had expected. No force is required. You don't have to hold onto the can or the lid. Just position the can near to the bar, press down very lightly on the lever, and whoosh, off it goes. It's so quick to start, that it still makes me jump. There is also a useful knife sharpening stone at the rear of the device. It's magic!

5 out of 5 stars An Absolute Boon for weak or Shaky Hands!!!   April 16, 2008

The product specification is bang on. My wife and I both have been experiencing difficulties in opening cans over the last years as we are both over 70 now.The item looks so simple that we wondered if it could possibly be effective - but immediately we found that by just offering up the can in the way illustrated on the box (left hand on the can base and just bringing the cutter down lightly on the can top) - the job was done with absolutely no fuss or worry. It opened sardine tins (with no key or rip top) as smoothly and cleanly as could ever be imagined. Additionally Amazon's external supplier was an absolute treasure - at the price this product is literally an "Absolute Snip" and is simply wonderful - many thanks, it looks durable and I expect it to last a good few years.

3 out of 5 stars Almost very good   February 15, 2008
Joyce
On the whole this product has been really good, but struggles with some the more awkward cans e.g. Fray Bentos tins.
The knife sharpening grinders are a bit of a joke as the 'low cost' manufacture means the grinders are a bit off centre and the knife guides are a bit hit and miss - for sharpening get yourself a Chantris and steel.
Summary: Very good for most tins, so I can't blame it struggling with awkward ones. Well done Beijing.

1 out of 5 stars Packed up on the day the guarantee ran out   January 9, 2008

This worked fine for about 10 months but to be honest it didn't get a great deal of use but would you know? It packed up in the last week just 1 year after purchase. I would give it 5 stars if it were still going but as its stuffed just as the warranty runs out - well?

Have cleaned the drive cog - now works OK
